How to get Koi to explain with a picture

Tap Fn + ⌘ and ask how something works. Koi puts a picture beside it while it talks: a sketch on grid paper, or a 3D model you can turn.

By Irakli, founder ·

How to do it

  1. Tap Fn + ⌘ and ask: "how does a jet engine work?", "show me how to attach the camera", "explain this circuit in 3D".
  2. Koi says it's sketching it, or building it in 3D, and the picture builds piece by piece while it explains. On a card, Koi's pointer draws each box, line and word.
  3. On a 3D scene, drag to turn it, shift-drag or right-drag to slide it, and scroll or pinch to zoom. Click a step in the captions under it to fly to the parts it's about. Double-click to let the camera fly on its own again.
  4. Ask a follow-up ("what does the fan do?") and Koi adds to the same picture. Ask for something new and the old one folds into a pill at the bottom right; click the pill to bring it back.
  5. To keep it, click the download button at the right end of its title bar: Save picture (PNG), or Save card or Save scene (.koi). It goes to your Desktop, named after its title.

Worth knowing

  • It sits in a small Mac window: drag it by its title bar, resize it by its edges, red closes it, yellow folds it to a pill in the corner, green fills the screen.
  • It goes when you hang up, or 90 seconds after it's finished. Move, minimize or fill it and it stays until you close it.
  • Double-click a .koi file and it opens in Koi in its own window, the scene still turning. It's rebuilt on your Mac, with no AI and no cost.
  • Drawing one counts against your plan's Koi, like the call. What to draw, the picture of your screen that question had and the call's language go to Koi's AI once; nothing of it is kept.
  • No call needed for a document: drop it on the notch's Visualize. See "How to see a document in 3D".
