Transcribe

Transcribe audio and video on your Mac

Drop in a voice memo, a recording or a video and Koi writes it down on your Mac, a line under each timestamp, with the sound on the page. Summarize it with a yes, or export SRT or VTT subtitles.

Any audio or video file, written down on your Mac

Give Koi a voice memo, a podcast, a lecture recording or a video, and it writes down what's said, a line under each timestamp, with the sound on the page to play back. It runs on your Mac with the same speech model as Koi's dictation, so the file never leaves it.

Transcribe a file in three steps

  1. Click Tools on Koi's dock and pick Transcribe a file, or choose File, Transcribe Audio or Video… in the menu bar. You can also drop the file on the Documents window.
  2. A page opens at once, named after the file, and fills in as it's heard. A card at the foot of the page shows how far it's got, with Cancel.
  3. When it's done, the page asks “Summarize this recording?”. Say yes for a title, a summary and your to-dos at the top.
  • Audio: m4a, mp3, wav, aiff and caf, and voice memos.
  • Video: mp4, mov and m4v.
  • Long files are written down in stretches of up to 25 seconds, each cut at its quietest moment.

Every line knows when it was said

Each line sits under its time as a small grey link. Click it and the sound jumps there. Fix a word in the text and the times stay right, so the page stays useful as you edit it.

Export SRT or VTT subtitles

The page's menu, Export, has Subtitles (SRT) and Subtitles (VTT). Each timed line becomes a cue, with the words as they read on the page now, edits included. Drop the file into a video editor or YouTube.

57 languages, and English from any of them

Koi uses Whisper, OpenAI's open speech model, in the size you pick: Small comes built in, Base is lighter, and Large v3 Turbo is the most accurate, a download away in Settings, Dictation. It understands 57 languages and works in the one you've picked for dictation.

What stays on your Mac

  • The file itself is read on your Mac and isn't changed, moved or uploaded.
  • The page keeps the words, their times and a copy of the sound, on your Mac. Cancel keeps nothing, unless you wrote on the page meanwhile.
  • Only a yes to “Summarize this recording?” sends the words, never the sound, to Koi's AI for the notes.

What it costs

Transcribing files is part of Koi, on every plan, with no limit on minutes. Pro is $20 a month after a 3-day free trial that needs a card, and Lifetime is paid once, from $59. See the plans. To record a call as it happens instead, see Record calls.
