Flashcards, study notes and a tutor, on your Mac

Koi turns a PDF, a Word file, slides or a recorded class into a summary, the key points, flashcards and a quiz, then quizzes you with Anki-style spacing. Study mode teaches you through a problem on your screen instead of handing over the answer.

Study tools that live in your notes

Koi's study tools aren't a separate app. They're part of the documents you already keep in Koi: the same pages that hold your class notes, equations and tables also hold your flashcards, your study notes and your recorded lectures. Your documents are kept on your Mac.

What Koi doesn't have, up front: no iPhone or iPad app, no sync, no sharing a deck with classmates, and no student price. If you study on your phone, a tool like Anki or RemNote fits better, and our Anki alternatives page compares them.

Flashcards with spaced repetition

Type /flashcards on any page for a table of two columns: the front of each card and the back. Write them like any table, with Tab and Return, or paste a spreadsheet in. Koi can write them for you too.

A Study pill over the cards opens them one at a time. You see the front, press Space for the back, then rate it Again, Hard, Good or Easy, or press 1 to 4. Each card comes back when it's due, spaced out the way Anki does it, so the ones you know drift apart and the hard ones keep returning. When each card is due is kept with the page, on your Mac.

Study notes from a PDF, a Word file or slides

  1. Choose Import in the Documents panel, or File, Import… in the menu bar, and pick the file. Koi takes PDFs, Word documents, PowerPoint slides, Markdown and text, and reads them on your Mac into a page of their words.
  2. Choose Make study notes from the page's document menu. It works on any page, not only imported ones.
  3. Koi writes a new page with a summary, the key points, flashcards, and a multiple-choice quiz kept as flashcards too.

The page's words, up to 120,000 characters, go to Koi's AI to do it, and what comes back is kept only in the new page on your Mac. Our guide to making flashcards from a PDF on a Mac goes step by step.

Record a class and get notes and flashcards

Tap Fn + ⌃, or click Record on Koi's dock, and pick In person. Koi listens through your Mac's microphone, writes down what's said on your Mac as it goes, and keeps the sound on the page so you can play it back.

When it ends, the page asks whether to summarize it. Say yes, and the transcript's words go to Koi's AI, which adds a summary, the key points, flashcards and what the class was told to do. Say no, and nothing from the recording leaves your Mac. More on recording with Koi. Ask your lecturer before you record, and check your school's rules: Koi doesn't announce itself to the room.

A tutor that teaches instead of answering

Turn on Study mode in Settings, under Koi, or from the menu bar. Then tap Fn + ⌘ and ask about the problem on your screen. Instead of handing over the answer, Koi circles where your working went wrong, asks what you'd try next, and draws only the next step on the screen.

Each thing you miss becomes a flashcard on a page called “What I got wrong”, ready to study before the exam. Study mode is a call with Koi, the assistant that sees your screen, so it uses Koi's AI, which is online.

Everything works by asking, too

Tap Fn + ⌘ and say it:

  • “Import my biology slides”
  • “Make study notes from this”
  • “Make flashcards from this page”
  • “Let's study these cards”
  • “Quiz me on what I got wrong”
  • “Record this lecture”
  • “Turn on Study mode”

Notes with equations, tables and charts

The cards sit in a full editor. Type /equation, or LaTeX between $$ and $$, for an equation drawn in the page. Add tables, one of 11 chart types drawn from a small table, to-do lists for what's due, and pictures. Pages export to Word or PDF on A4 or US Letter paper. Tap Fn + ⌥ to talk your notes onto the page, on your Mac, offline. More on Koi's notes and documents, or see our list of notes apps with LaTeX.

What stays on your Mac, and what doesn't

  • On your Mac: your documents, flashcards and when each is due, imported files, and recorded classes with their sound and transcript.
  • Online, when you ask: Make study notes sends the page's words to Koi's AI provider. Notes on a class send its transcript's words, only after your yes.
  • Online, on a call: talking to Koi, Study mode included, sends your voice to the AI provider while the call lasts, with a picture of your screen alongside each question unless you change that in Settings.

What it costs a student

There's no student price and no free plan. Pro is $20 a month, or $192 a year, after a 3-day free trial that needs a card. Lifetime is paid once, $59 for the first 25 buyers and climbing as it sells. It keeps documents, flashcards, dictation and recorded classes for good, with Koi credit worth a fifth of the price for study notes and Study mode. That credit never expires, but it does run out.
