The best Quizlet alternatives for Mac

Quizlet has no Mac app, so on a Mac it's a browser tab. For a real Mac app, Anki is free and Koi writes cards from your PDFs, slides and lectures; Knowt is the closest free copy of Quizlet. Stay on Quizlet if you study on your phone or use shared sets.

Is there a Quizlet app for Mac?

No. Quizlet's App Store listing names iPhone, iPad and Apple Vision, not the Mac, so on a Mac you study at quizlet.com in your browser. The phone app has Learn, which adapts to how you're doing, practice tests, and study sets built from notes you type, paste or upload. It says it brings back what you need to review when you need it.

The App Store lists Quizlet Plus as in-app purchases of $9.99 and $44.99, and Plus Unlimited at $44.99. Quizlet's help center describes Plus as extended access to its premium study tools with monthly limits, which is why Plus Unlimited exists.

We make Koi, so read this with that in mind. Every fact about another app comes from its own site, help center or App Store page, checked October 21, 2026. Prices change, and Quizlet's own pricing page didn't load for us, so check it before you pay. We didn't run tests.

Why people look for a Quizlet alternative

  • The study modes they want sit behind Plus, and Plus still has monthly limits.
  • They want a real Mac app instead of a browser tab.
  • They want cards made from their own PDFs, slides and lectures, not a shared set someone else wrote.
  • They want cards and notes in one place, so the explanation sits next to the card.
  • They want spaced repetition they can trust for months, not a cram session.

Before you switch, know that a browser tab can feel close to an app. On macOS Sonoma 14 or later, Safari can save quizlet.com as a web app in your Dock:

  1. Open quizlet.com in Safari and sign in.
  2. Choose File, then Add to Dock, or Add to Dock from the Share button.
  3. Name it and click Add. It opens from the Dock or Spotlight like any app.

When Quizlet is still the better pick

Stay on Quizlet if

  • You study on your phone. Koi has no iPhone, iPad or Android app, and no sync.
  • You use sets other people made, or share yours with classmates. Koi has no shared decks or public library.
  • Your teacher assigns work through Quizlet, or runs games in class.
  • You like Learn, Match and practice tests. Koi's study window is one card at a time.
  • You want it free. Koi has no free plan and no student price.
  • Your sets lean on pictures or diagrams. Koi's cards are the two columns of a table.

6 Quizlet alternatives, ranked for Mac users

1. Koi

Best for: Cards written for you from your own PDFs, slides and lectures, in a native Mac app

Koi is a Mac app, and its flashcards live on the same pages as your notes. Type /flashcards for a table with a front and a back column and write your own, or let Koi write them. Import a PDF, a Word file or PowerPoint slides, choose Make study notes, and you get a new page with a summary, the key points, flashcards and a multiple-choice quiz. Our guide on making flashcards from a PDF on a Mac goes step by step.

A Study pill opens the cards one at a time: Space shows the back, then Again, Hard, Good or Easy, or 1 to 4. Each card comes back when it's due, spaced out the way Anki does it. Tap Fn + ⌘ and say “quiz me on what I got wrong”, or tap Fn + ⌃, pick In person, and a recorded class can end as notes with flashcards.

Where it loses to Quizlet: no phone app, no shared sets, no games, no free plan. Making cards with AI uses Koi's AI, which is online; writing and studying them doesn't. Pro is $20 a month or $192 a year after a 3-day trial, or Lifetime from $59 once.

2. Anki

Best for: Serious spaced repetition, free on Mac

Anki's computer version is free, with a Mac app for macOS 13 or later on Apple silicon and Intel, and free sync through AnkiWeb. AnkiDroid is free on Android, and AnkiMobile is $24.99 once on iPhone. Your collection lives on your Mac, and syncing it through AnkiWeb is up to you. It has shared decks too. The weakness: you write every card yourself, and it takes a while to learn. Our Anki alternatives page goes deeper.

3. Knowt

Best for: The closest thing to Quizlet, with a free Learn mode

Knowt says Quizlet sets import in two clicks, and its help center lists Learn, practice tests, spaced repetition and Match as free on your own sets. Ultra is $24.99 a month, or $149.99 a year with a 3-day trial, and adds unlimited AI summaries of PDFs, videos, slides and lectures, where Free gets one a month. It runs on the web, iPhone and Android, with no Mac app listed, so your sets live in your Knowt account online. More in our Knowt alternatives.

4. RemNote

Best for: Notes and flashcards together, on every device

RemNote has apps for Mac (Apple silicon and Intel), Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android. Free has unlimited notes and flashcards and 5 AI cards from text, PDFs or slides. Pro is $8 a month or $96 a year; Pro with AI, at $18 a month or $216 a year, adds its Learn PDF tool and a lecture recorder. It lists an Offline Mode, and your notes sync through your account. The weakness: it's a lot of app to learn.

5. Gizmo

Best for: AI quizzes on your phone, with imports from Quizlet and Anki

Gizmo's App Store page says it imports from Quizlet, Anki, YouTube, PDFs, notes and PowerPoint, with spaced repetition and an AI tutor. It's on iPhone, iPad and Android, with no Mac app listed. The App Store lists Gizmo Unlimited purchases from $6.99 to $309.99, without saying what each covers. Your decks live in your Gizmo account, and the AI that writes them runs online. More in our Gizmo alternatives.

6. Mochi

Best for: Plain Markdown cards, offline, with a Mac app

Mochi runs on Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, Android and the web. Free is unlimited and offline, with your data on your device. Pro, $5 a month, adds sync, publishing decks and AI. It doesn't make cards from your PDFs for you.

How to bring your Quizlet sets to Koi

Koi has no Quizlet import, but Quizlet lets you export sets you made yourself, on its website. Sets you copied from someone else can't be exported.

  1. On quizlet.com, open your set and choose Export from its menu.
  2. Pick how terms and definitions are separated, then Copy text.
  3. Paste it into Numbers or another spreadsheet so the terms and definitions sit in two columns, and copy those cells.
  4. In Koi, type /flashcards on a page and paste. Koi's tables take a spreadsheet pasted in.
  5. Click the Study pill over the table to start.

Your Quizlet progress doesn't come with you: every card starts fresh. If you only want new cards from new material, skip all this and let Koi write them from the lecture slides.

How to make and study flashcards in Koi

From your own course material:

  1. Choose Import in the Documents window, or File, Import… in the menu bar, and pick a PDF, Word file, PowerPoint deck, Markdown or text file. Koi reads it on your Mac into a page.
  2. Choose Make study notes from the page's document menu.
  3. Koi writes a new page with a summary, the key points, flashcards, and a multiple-choice quiz kept as flashcards too.
  4. Click the Study pill over the cards. Press Space to see the back, then rate it Again, Hard, Good or Easy, or press 1 to 4.
  5. Come back tomorrow. The cards that are due show up; the ones you know wait longer.

From a class you sit in:

  1. Tap Fn + ⌃, or click Record on Koi's dock, and pick In person.
  2. Koi writes down what's said on your Mac as it goes, and keeps the sound on the page.
  3. When it ends, say yes to notes. The transcript's words go to Koi's AI, which adds a summary, the key points, flashcards and what the class was told to do.

Ask your lecturer before you record, and check your school's rules: Koi doesn't announce itself to the room.

Where your cards are kept

Quizlet, Knowt, Gizmo and RemNote keep your sets in their accounts, so they can sync to your phone. Anki and Mochi keep cards on your device and sync if you ask. Koi keeps your pages, your flashcards and when each is due on your Mac, with no sync.

Koi isn't all local. Make study notes sends the page's words, up to 120,000 characters, to Koi's AI, and the result is kept only in the new page on your Mac. Notes on a recorded class send its transcript's words, and only after your yes. Say no, and nothing from the recording leaves your Mac.

A term of study in Koi, start to finish

Here's what replacing Quizlet with Koi looks like for one course. Each week, record the lecture and say yes to notes, so the page gets flashcards from what was said. Import the slides and choose Make study notes, so another page gets cards from what was shown. Add your own cards to either table as you go: they study the same way.

Study a few minutes a day from the Study pill, and only the cards that are due come up. The night before a quiz, tap Fn + ⌘ and say “let's study these cards”, or “quiz me on what I got wrong” to go over your misses. Equations can sit beside the cards: type /equation, or LaTeX between $$ and $$. Our list of notes apps with LaTeX compares that part.

What you won't get: a set to send a classmate, a game to play in class, or the cards on your phone on the bus. That's the trade.

What each one costs a student

  • Anki: free on Mac, Windows, Linux and Android. AnkiMobile is $24.99 once on iPhone.
  • Mochi: free and offline; Pro is $5 a month for sync and AI.
  • Knowt: free for flashcards, Learn and spaced repetition; Ultra is $24.99 a month or $149.99 a year.
  • RemNote: free for notes and cards; Pro $8 a month, Pro with AI $18 a month.
  • Quizlet: free with limits; the App Store lists Plus from $9.99 and Plus Unlimited at $44.99.
  • Koi: Pro is $20 a month or $192 a year after a 3-day trial that needs a card. Lifetime is paid once, from $59.

Koi is the most expensive monthly option here, and it isn't only a flashcard app. The same plan gets you unlimited dictation in any Mac app, recorded lectures and calls, and documents with LaTeX and charts. If cards are all you want, Anki or Knowt will cost you less.

Quizlet vs Koi

  • Where it runs: Quizlet is your browser on a Mac, and a phone app. Koi is a native Mac app with nothing on your phone.
  • Making cards: both make sets from your notes. Koi also writes them from a PDF, Word file, slides or a recorded class, with a summary and a quiz beside them.
  • Studying: Quizlet has Learn, practice tests and games. Koi shows one card at a time with Again, Hard, Good and Easy, and brings it back when it's due.
  • Sharing: Quizlet is built around shared sets and classes. Koi shares nothing by itself; you can send a page as a PDF.
  • Where cards live: Quizlet keeps them in its cloud. Koi keeps your pages and when each card is due on your Mac.
  • Help on homework: Koi's Study mode circles where your working went wrong on screen and keeps a card for each miss.

Study mode is a call with Koi, the assistant that sees your screen, so it's online. Read how it works in our guide to an AI tutor that sees your screen.
