The best Knowt alternatives in 2026

Knowt's flashcards and study modes are free, so stay if you write your own cards. If its one free AI summary a month or the missing Mac app is the problem, Koi turns lectures and PDFs into notes and cards on a Mac, RemNote does it on every device, and Anki is free.

What Knowt gives you, and where it stops

Knowt is a free study site and phone app. You make flashcards and notes, import Quizlet sets in two clicks, and study with Learn, practice tests, spaced repetition and Match. Its help center says all of those are free on your own sets, with unlimited sets and notes.

The AI is where the free plan stops. Free gets one AI summary a month, shared between PDFs, videos, pictures, PowerPoints and recorded lectures. Ultra, at $24.99 a month or $149.99 a year with a 3-day trial on the yearly plan, makes them unlimited, removes the ads, and adds a podcast generator, a voice tutor and AP, SAT and ACT prep. Knowt runs on the web, iPhone and Android, with a Chrome extension. Its site lists no Mac app.

We make Koi, so read this with that in mind. Every fact about another app comes from its own site, help center or App Store page, checked October 21, 2026. We didn't run tests.

Why people look for a Knowt alternative

  • One AI summary a month isn't many when every lecture and every reading wants one.
  • Ultra costs more a month than many study apps, and the yearly plan is paid up front.
  • There's no Mac app, so on a laptop it's a browser tab.
  • They'd rather their notes and recordings weren't kept in someone else's account.
  • They want one tool for notes, cards and recorded classes, not three tabs.

When Knowt is still the better pick

Stay on Knowt if

  • You want flashcards, Learn and spaced repetition for free, and you write the cards yourself. Koi has no free plan.
  • You study on your phone. Koi has no iPhone or Android app, and no sync.
  • You study with friends: live collaboration, shared sets and practice rooms. Koi has none of that.
  • You're preparing for AP, SAT or ACT exams and want Knowt's practice material.
  • You move between a school Chromebook and a Mac. Koi is Mac only.

6 Knowt alternatives worth trying

1. Koi

Best for: Notes, flashcards and recorded classes in one Mac app

Koi is a Mac app where your study material, your notes and your cards are pages on your Mac. Import a PDF, Word file or slides and choose Make study notes: Koi writes a page with a summary, the key points, flashcards and a multiple-choice quiz. Tap Fn + ⌃ and pick In person to record a class; when it ends, say yes and the page gets a summary, key points, flashcards and what the class was told to do.

Recording is unlimited on every plan, and it's written down on your Mac. The notes from it, and study notes from a file, use Koi's AI, which is online and counts toward your plan's Koi usage. Cards study one at a time with Again, Hard, Good or Easy, each coming back when it's due, spaced out the way Anki does it.

Where it loses: no phone, no shared sets, no Learn or Match, no free plan. Pro is $20 a month or $192 a year after a 3-day trial, or Lifetime from $59 once.

2. Quizlet

Best for: The biggest library of shared sets

Quizlet has Learn, practice tests and study sets made from notes you upload, on the web, iPhone and iPad. Its App Store page lists Plus from $9.99 and Plus Unlimited at $44.99 as in-app purchases, and its help center says Plus has monthly limits. No Mac app. Sets live in your account. See our Quizlet alternatives.

3. Anki

Best for: Free, serious spaced repetition with a Mac app

Anki is free on Mac (macOS 13 or later, Apple silicon and Intel), Windows, Linux and Android, with free sync, and AnkiMobile is $24.99 once on iPhone. Your cards live on your Mac. No AI writes them for you, and it's plain to look at. More in our Anki alternatives.

4. RemNote

Best for: A Mac app with notes and cards, and AI on a paid plan

RemNote has apps for Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android. Free has unlimited notes and flashcards, 3 annotated PDFs and 5 AI cards from text, PDFs or slides. Pro is $8 a month; Pro with AI, $18 a month or $216 a year, adds AI flashcards, quizzes and summaries from PDFs and a lecture recorder. It's a big app to learn. See our RemNote alternatives.

5. StudyFetch

Best for: An AI tutor that talks, built around your uploads

StudyFetch turns uploads into flashcards, quizzes and notes, records lectures, and has Sparky, a voice tutor. It's free to start. Its App Store page lists Premium at $19.99 a month or $96 a year, on iPhone and iPad, and it runs on the web. No Mac app listed. More in our StudyFetch alternatives.

6. Gizmo

Best for: AI quizzes with streaks and leagues, on your phone

Gizmo makes flashcards from PDFs, notes, YouTube links and recorded lessons, quizzes you with spaced repetition, and imports Quizlet and Anki decks. It has XP, leagues and streaks, on iPhone, iPad and Android. The App Store lists Gizmo Unlimited purchases from $6.99 to $309.99, without saying what each covers.

How to turn a lecture into flashcards in Koi

  1. Tap Fn + ⌃, or click Record on Koi's dock, and pick In person.
  2. Leave it running. Koi listens through your Mac's microphone and writes down what's said on your Mac as it goes.
  3. Stop it at the end. The page asks whether to summarize it.
  4. Say yes. The transcript's words go to Koi's AI, and the page gets a summary, the key points, flashcards and what the class was told to do.
  5. Click the Study pill over the flashcards and rate each one Again, Hard, Good or Easy.

Say no, and nothing from the recording leaves your Mac: you keep the sound and the transcript. Ask your lecturer first, and check your school's rules: Koi doesn't announce itself to the room. The full walkthrough is in how to record a lecture on a Mac.

Can you bring your Knowt sets?

Not with an import: Koi has none, for Knowt or anything else. What you can do is copy terms and definitions into a spreadsheet as two columns and paste them into a /flashcards table on a Koi page, since Koi's tables take a spreadsheet pasted in. Your Knowt progress stays behind. For most people the easier path is to keep old sets where they are and let Koi make cards from this term's new material.

Knowt vs Koi

  • Price: Knowt's cards and study modes are free. Koi is a paid plan, with no free tier and no student price.
  • AI: Knowt Free makes one AI summary a month. Koi makes study notes whenever you ask, within your plan's Koi usage.
  • Recording: Knowt's lecture recordings count toward that one summary on Free. Koi records as much as you like, on your Mac.
  • Study modes: Knowt has Learn, practice tests, Match and spaced repetition. Koi has spaced repetition, a quiz on its study notes, and Study mode.
  • Where your things are: Knowt keeps them in your account, on every device. Koi keeps them on one Mac.
  • Beyond study: Koi is also dictation in any app, call recording, a calendar and documents. Knowt is for studying.

Knowt's voice tutor and Koi's Study mode

Ultra includes Kai, a voice tutor that works on your files. Koi's closest thing is Study mode. Turn it on in Settings, under Koi, or from the menu bar, tap Fn + ⌘, and ask about the problem on your screen. Instead of the answer, Koi circles where your working went wrong, asks what you'd try next and draws only the next step. Each thing you miss becomes a card on a page called “What I got wrong”.

It's a call with Koi, the assistant that sees your screen, so your voice and, unless you turn it off, a picture of your screen go to the AI provider while it lasts. See our guide to an AI tutor that sees your screen.
