An offline Notion alternative for your own docs, on one Mac
An offline Notion alternative for your own docs on one Mac: pages stored on the Mac, tables, charts, LaTeX and Word export. No databases, sync or iPhone app.
Notion is already free for college students with a school email, so the best alternative is the one that does what Notion doesn't: Obsidian for free notes as files, Goodnotes for handwriting, Anki or RemNote for flashcards, and Koi for study notes and recorded lectures on a Mac, if $20 a month fits the budget.

First
Before you switch, check what you'd be leaving. Notion's Education Plan is free for students and educators at an accredited college or university. You need a school email as your main Notion address, you re-verify it once a year, and school-age students don't qualify. It gives a one-person workspace with unlimited pages and blocks, file uploads and 30 days of version history.
So the reason to leave usually isn't price. It's that Notion is a workspace, not a study tool: no flashcards of its own, AI that needs a Business plan, offline only page by page, and no Word export for an assignment. The apps below each fix one of those.
We make Koi, so it's first because it's ours, not because it's the best deal. It isn't: for a student, Koi's price is the problem, and we say so below. Facts about the other apps come from their own sites, with prices in USD, checked October 16, 2026. We didn't run tests.
The catch
Koi Pro is $20 a month, or $192 a year, after a 3-day trial that needs a card. There's no free plan and no student discount. Lifetime, paid once, is the cheapest way in: $59 for the first 25 buyers, then the price climbs as it sells. It keeps dictation, recorded lectures and documents for good, but its AI, which makes study notes and flashcards, comes as a fixed credit that runs out with use.
Plenty of apps students use cut their price. Bear takes 30% off the first year, Tana's Outliner gives 50% off for education, and dictation apps like Wispr Flow (50%), Superwhisper (40%) and Aqua Voice (70%) have student prices too. If the budget is tight, the free picks below come first.
The list
Best for: Turning slides, PDFs and lectures into study notes and flashcards on a Mac
Import a PDF, a Word file or your lecture slides, choose Make study notes, and Koi writes a page with a summary, the key points, flashcards and a multiple-choice quiz. A Study pill quizzes you one card at a time, each one coming back when it's due, spaced out the way Anki does it. Our guide on making flashcards from a PDF shows the steps.
Tap Fn + ⌃ and pick In person to record a class: Koi writes it down on your Mac and keeps the sound to play back, and if you say yes to notes, adds a summary, key points, flashcards and what you were told to do. With Study mode on, tap Fn + ⌘ and ask about a problem on your screen: Koi circles where your working went wrong and asks what you'd try next, rather than handing over the answer. Pages have LaTeX, tables and charts, and you can dictate into them with Fn + ⌥, offline.
What it can't do: no iPad or Apple Pencil, no iPhone app, no sync, no sharing a page with classmates, no databases or planner templates. Study notes, lecture notes and Study mode use Koi's AI, which is online.
Best for: Free notes as plain files, with LaTeX and plugins for everything else
Obsidian is free and keeps notes as Markdown files in a folder on your Mac, with backlinks between ideas, Canvas boards and LaTeX through MathJax. Thousands of community plugins add the rest. Sync is $5 a month, or $4 billed yearly, and there are iPhone and Android apps. It takes some setting up.
Best for: Free notes on your Mac, iPhone and iPad, with recorded lectures
Apple Notes is free, syncs through iCloud, takes Apple Pencil on iPad, and records audio in a note with a live transcript on M1 or later Macs, in 10 languages. It has basic tables and Math Notes for sums, but no LaTeX, no flashcards and no Word export.
Best for: Handwritten notes on an iPad, with a Mac app alongside
Goodnotes is built for handwriting and marking up PDFs, now with typed documents and recording too. It runs on iPad, iPhone, Mac (macOS 15.6 or later), Windows, Android and the web. Free has 3 notebooks and 20 minutes of audio. Essential is $11.99 a year and Pro $35.99 a year, and an AI Pass adds $9.99 a month.
Best for: Notes and flashcards in one app, with PDF markup
RemNote keeps notes and flashcards in one app, with a Mac app for Apple silicon and Intel. Free includes unlimited notes and flashcards, 3 annotated PDFs and 5 AI cards from text, PDFs and slides. Pro is $8 a month, and Pro with AI, which reads a PDF into flashcards, quizzes and summaries, is $18 a month or $216 a year.
Best for: Free, serious flashcard review on every device
Anki is free on Mac, Windows and Linux, with free sync through AnkiWeb, AnkiDroid free on Android and AnkiMobile at $24.99 on iPhone. Cards can hold pictures, sound and video, and add-ons extend it. It isn't a notes app, and you write every card yourself, but for long-term review it's hard to beat.
Best for: Clean Markdown notes with math, cheap with a student discount
Bear is a Markdown notes app for Mac, iPhone and iPad that renders LaTeX with MathJax. Pro is $29.99 a year, and students and scholars get 30% off the first year. It has no flashcards, AI or voice of its own.

Notion's jobs
Lectures
A recorded lecture means you can go back to what was said, and both Apple Notes and Koi record on a Mac. Koi keeps the sound on your Mac and only sends the transcript's words to its AI if you say yes to notes when it ends; more on recording with Koi. Apple Notes transcribes in the note.
Ask your lecturer first, and read your school's policy. Some universities limit recording, or sending recordings to an AI service, and Koi doesn't announce itself to the room.
Choosing
If equations are most of your notes, see our list of notes apps with LaTeX for Mac, and for flashcards alone, our Anki alternatives for Mac. Everything Koi does for studying is on its study tools page, and the prices are on the plans.
