Video downloader

Paste a link. Keep the video.

Koi's video downloader saves videos from YouTube, TikTok, X, Instagram, Vimeo and hundreds more sites. Paste or drop the link in the notch, pick the video or just the sound and a size up to 4K, and it goes straight to your Downloads.

Paste a link, pick a size

The video downloader is in the notch's Tools. It saves a video from YouTube, TikTok, X, Instagram, Vimeo and hundreds more sites to your Mac, as the video, the video without sound, or the sound alone.

  1. Copy a video's link.
  2. Hover the notch, open Tools and click Downloader.
  3. Paste it in the field and press Return. Koi shows the video's picture, title and site.
  4. Pick Video, No sound or Sound only, then a size: 4K, 1440p, 1080p and down, each with about how big it'll be.
  5. It's saved to Downloads under the video's title and put in the Files Tray. Open it, show it in Finder, or click Another.

Drop it, say it, or link it

  • Drag a link onto the notch. It shows Download video; drop it there.
  • On a call, say “download this video”, “just the sound” or “in 720”. Koi takes that size or the nearest under it, or the best there is. It needs Let Koi use my Mac for me on.
  • Open koi://download?url= with the link, from Shortcuts or a script.

It keeps going with the notch folded, and Cancel stops it.

Made to play on a Mac

  • At each size, H.264 video and AAC sound come first, as they play everywhere on a Mac.
  • A size only offered as VP9 or AV1, like 4K on YouTube, is still saved as MP4. QuickTime plays only the AV1 kind, on newer Macs.
  • No sound keeps the picture alone. Sound only is an M4A.

Straight from the site to your Mac

The downloader runs yt-dlp and ffmpeg, open source tools that come inside the app. The link and the video go between your Mac and that site only, never through Koi's server, and neither is kept or counted. A link you give Koi on a call is part of your question, so it goes to the AI like the rest of it. Anonymous usage counts only that the Tools button was pressed. More on the privacy page.

What it won't do

  • Private videos, ones behind a sign-in, paid streams and DRM: the site refuses, and Koi says so.
  • Playlists. One link is one video.
  • Live streams while they're live. Try again once it has ended.
  • When a site changes how it serves video, the fix comes with Koi's next update.

Download only what you have the right to. Many sites' terms forbid it, and what you download is on you, as our terms say.

Koi and video downloader apps

Downie and Pulltube are whole apps for downloading, with browser extensions, and yt-dlp is free in Terminal. Koi's is one tool in your notch. See the Downie alternatives, or how to download a video on Mac step by step.
