Why switch
Why people look for a Superwhisper alternative
Superwhisper is one of the strongest dictation apps on the Mac, so an alternative has to win on something specific. Its free plan already gives unlimited dictation with local Whisper models. One Pro license covers Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, with no limit on computers. It lists 100+ languages and works offline.
People still switch, usually for one of these reasons:
- Price. Pro is $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year or $249.99 once. Some apps do local dictation for $25 once, or for nothing.
- An Intel Mac. Superwhisper says Intel Macs work best with its cloud models, and that offline models only run really well on Apple silicon.
- Open source. Some people want to read the code of the app that hears everything they say.
- More than dictation. An assistant that can see the screen and help with what's on it.
- Files first. If you mostly transcribe recordings, an app built around files fits better.
- Fewer settings. Modes are powerful, but if you never touch them, a simpler app is easier to live with.
We make Koi, so read this with that in mind. Prices are in USD from each app's official site, checked October 7, 2026, unless we say otherwise.
Plans
Superwhisper's plans and lifetime price
Superwhisper has two plans for individuals, plus Enterprise for companies. Free gives you unlimited dictation with any local Whisper model, a custom vocabulary, text replacements and up to two modes without AI processing. Superwhisper says nothing you dictate on Free leaves your device.
Pro adds the cloud voice models, the Cohere Transcribe and Parakeet local models, file transcription, unlimited modes, AI modes like Super, context awareness, realtime transcription, system audio recording, speaker separation and your own API keys. New users get 3,000 words of Pro for free; after that the app falls back to Free and nothing is deleted.
| Plan | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Unlimited dictation with local Whisper models |
| Pro, monthly | $8.49 a month | All Pro features |
| Pro, annual | $84.99 a year | Same features, about 17% less than monthly |
| Pro, lifetime | $249.99 once | Same features, and the key never expires |
Every Pro plan has the same features; only the billing differs. Students, educators and non-profits get 40% off when they buy on Superwhisper's own site, and the site offers a 30-day refund on all plans. It needs macOS 14 or later. The details are on Superwhisper's plans page.
The picks
The best Superwhisper alternatives for Mac
1. Koi
Best for: Free local dictation, plus an AI that sees your screen
Koi's dictation is free and unlimited on every plan. Press Fn + ⌥ in any app and talk; speech is turned into text on your Mac with Whisper, so it works offline. Words appear while you speak, 57 languages are detected automatically, and music or a loud room doesn't get written down. It runs on Apple silicon and Intel Macs with macOS 14 or later.
The other half is what sets it apart. Hold Fn + ⌘ and ask Koi out loud: it can look at your screen if you let it, circle the right button, sketch on a board over the screen, rewrite selected text and use the Mac for you. It also records online calls on your Mac with You and Them kept apart, and no bot joins the call. Talking to Koi uses cloud AI models; your dictation, pages and recordings stay on your Mac.
Where Superwhisper wins: more languages, Windows and phones, custom modes, a custom vocabulary (Koi has none) and file transcription (Koi doesn't transcribe audio or video files). Koi Free costs nothing, and Lifetime is $99 once.
2. VoiceInk
Best for: Local dictation for $25 once
VoiceInk is the cheapest paid one-time price on this list. It transcribes on your Mac, removes filler words, keeps a dictionary, expands short phrases and rewrites selected text when you ask. Optional cloud enhancement sends only text, never your voice.
At the time of writing it's $25 for one Mac, $39 for two and $49 for three, with lifetime updates and a 14-day money-back guarantee. It's open source under GPLv3. It needs Apple silicon and macOS 14.4 or later, so it's no help on an Intel Mac.
3. FluidVoice
Best for: Free, open source dictation with on-device cleanup
FluidVoice says it's free forever, with no tiers. The app is open source under GPLv3, transcribes on the Mac and works offline. You choose the speech model: Parakeet, Nemotron, Cohere Transcribe, Apple Speech or Whisper, with 40+ languages across them. Write Mode rewrites text in any app, Command Mode runs Mac actions by voice, and each app can get its own prompt, a bit like Superwhisper's modes.
The local cleanup model, Fluid Intelligence, is maintained privately and isn't open source. FluidVoice needs macOS 15 or later, one version newer than Superwhisper, and Intel Macs work with its Whisper models only.
4. Handy
Best for: The simplest free, open source option, on Mac, Windows and Linux
Handy does one thing: press a shortcut, speak, and the text lands in the field you're typing in. It runs Whisper (Small, Medium, Turbo or Large) or Parakeet V3 on your computer without sending audio to the cloud. It's free, MIT-licensed, and runs on macOS, Windows and Linux.
It's the opposite of Superwhisper's modes: very few settings. If you never opened the modes screen, that's a feature.
5. MacWhisper
Best for: Transcribing files, podcasts and meetings
MacWhisper is a transcription app first. Drag in audio or video (mp3, wav, m4a, mov, mp4 and more) and get text back from local models, in 100 languages, with subtitles exported as SRT or VTT. Pro adds speaker recognition, batch transcription, YouTube links, more export formats and automatic meeting recording for Zoom, Teams, Webex and others. It does system-wide dictation too.
There's a free version, and Pro is a one-time license with lifetime updates: €64 on its site at the time of writing, priced in euros. More in our MacWhisper alternatives guide.
6. Spokenly
Best for: Free local models with no account, plus Windows and Linux
Spokenly's local Whisper and Parakeet models are free with no limits and no account. A local-only mode blocks every network request. Bring your own API keys for cloud engines at no charge, or pay $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year for Pro's cloud models, AI cleanup and sync. It runs on Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone.
7. Typeless
Best for: Polished cloud dictation on every platform, Intel Macs included
If you liked Superwhisper's AI modes and don't mind the cloud, Typeless is a close match. It removes filler words, drops what you take back mid-sentence, formats lists, changes tone per app, translates, and edits selected text by voice. It runs on macOS (Apple silicon and Intel), Windows, Linux, iOS and Android, in 100+ languages.
Transcription happens on Typeless's servers, with zero data retention, it says. Free has a weekly word limit. Pro is $12 per member a month billed yearly, or $30 billed monthly. There's no lifetime option.
8. Wispr Flow
Best for: Cloud dictation with team features
Wispr Flow cleans up as you talk and syncs across Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Its privacy page says transcription always happens in the cloud. Free is 2,000 words a week on desktop; Pro is $15 per user a month, or $12 a month billed annually, and there's no lifetime plan. See Wispr Flow vs Superwhisper for the two head to head, or our Wispr Flow alternatives if Flow is the one you're leaving.

Koi's monthly and yearly prices pay for time with the assistant and recorded calls. Dictation is free on every plan, so for dictation alone Koi costs $0. See Koi's pricing for what each plan includes.
3-year cost
What three years of each costs
A one-time price only makes sense next to how long you'll use the app. Here are three years of each, worked out from the official prices above. No discounts, taxes or future price changes are included.
| Plan | The math | 3 years |
|---|---|---|
| Superwhisper Pro, monthly | $8.49 × 36 months | $305.64 |
| Superwhisper Pro, yearly | $84.99 × 3 years | $254.97 |
| Superwhisper Pro, lifetime | Paid once | $249.99 |
| Koi Free, dictation only | Free | $0 |
| Koi Lifetime | Paid once | $99 |
| Koi Pro, yearly | $192 × 3 years | $576 |
| VoiceInk, one Mac | Paid once | $25 |
| FluidVoice or Handy | Free | $0 |
| Spokenly Pro, yearly | $99.99 × 3 years | $299.97 |
| Wispr Flow Pro, billed annually | $12 × 36 months | $432 |
| Typeless Pro, billed yearly | $12 × 36 months | $432 |
| Typeless Pro, monthly | $30 × 36 months | $1,080 |
Two things stand out. Superwhisper's lifetime license is a fair deal if you're staying: it costs less than three years of the annual plan ($249.99 against $254.97) and less than 30 months of the monthly one ($8.49 × 30 = $254.70). And if all you need is local dictation, the free apps and VoiceInk's $25 beat every subscription here.
MacWhisper Pro isn't in the table because it's priced in euros: €64 once, with lifetime updates. Koi Pro buys time with the assistant and 10 recorded calls a month, not dictation. Koi Lifetime gives unlimited dictation and recorded calls for good, plus about 5 hours with Koi.
Head to head
Superwhisper vs MacWhisper: which do you need?
They sound alike and both run Whisper on your Mac, but they start from opposite ends.
- Superwhisper is dictation first. You press a key, talk, and the text lands in the app you're in. Modes reshape the words for email, messages or code. Files and meeting audio are Pro extras.
- MacWhisper is transcription first. You drag in a recording and get a transcript you can export as subtitles or text, with speaker labels, YouTube links and batch jobs on Pro. Dictation is there too, but it isn't the main event.
On price, Superwhisper Pro is a subscription or $249.99 once, and MacWhisper Pro is €64 once. Superwhisper also covers Windows, iPhone and Android under the same license, which matters if you don't only work on a Mac.
Pick Superwhisper if you mostly speak into apps. Pick MacWhisper if you mostly have recordings to turn into text. Some people use both. If you want local dictation and call recording without file transcription, Koi covers that, but it doesn't transcribe audio or video files.
Free
Is there a free Superwhisper alternative?
Yes, several, and Superwhisper's own free plan is one of the better ones. If you want a different app:
- Koi: unlimited dictation on your Mac, plus a limited amount of time with the assistant and 2 recorded calls a month. It needs an account, which is just an email.
- Handy: free and open source, on Mac, Windows and Linux.
- FluidVoice: free and open source, with cleanup that runs on the Mac. It needs macOS 15.
- Spokenly: free local models with no account, plus a local-only mode.
- Apple Dictation: built into the Mac. It does less cleanup, and Keyboard settings show whether yours is processed on the device.
The first four run speech to text on your computer, so they work without internet.
Choosing
Which Superwhisper alternative fits you
- Want dictation plus an assistant that sees your screen, and call recording? Koi.
- Want to pay once, and little? VoiceInk at $25, on Apple silicon.
- Want free and open source? FluidVoice on macOS 15, or Handy anywhere.
- Mostly transcribing files? MacWhisper.
- On an Intel Mac and want local dictation? Koi, or FluidVoice's Whisper models.
- Fine with the cloud and want polish everywhere? Typeless or Wispr Flow.
Stay with Superwhisper if you rely on its modes, need Windows and Android under one license, dictate in a language outside Koi's 57, or already own a lifetime key. Paid for is paid for.
A good test before you switch: dictate the same three things in both apps. A long email, a quick chat reply, and a paragraph full of names and jargon. Count how much you had to fix. Our list of the best dictation apps for Mac has more options.
