Private notes on your Mac, with tables, charts and math

Koi is a local notes app for Mac. Pages are files on your Mac, with no sync and no cloud copy, and the editor does more than plain notes: tables like Notion's, to-do lists, 11 chart types, LaTeX equations, and export to Word and PDF. Start by typing, or by talking.

A blank page, ready for typing or talking

Koi opens on Home: Talk with Koi, then Dictate, Write and Record calls, over a blank sheet. Start typing, or start talking, and it becomes a page of its own. Write, or New page (⌘N), makes one in Recents straight away.

Talking works because dictation is built in. Tap Fn + ⌥ and Koi types what you say, on your Mac, in any of 57 languages. More on voice to text on Mac.

A proper editor, not a text box

Headings, bold, italic, underline, lists, to-do lists, colour, and pictures you drag in. Type / for anything else: a table, a chart, an equation. It feels closer to Notion than to a plain notes app, and it all lives on your Mac.

Pages hold more than words. Pictures sit right in the text, and a recorded call keeps its video on its page. Dictated words land like typed ones, so you can talk a first draft and tidy it with the keyboard.

To-do lists you can tick off

Type [] and a space, or pick a to-do list from the / menu, and each line gets a checkbox. Tick it when it's done. Koi can write to-do lists too, and they export to Word and PDF.

A recorded call uses them as well: turn on call notes and your to-dos from the call land at the top of its page, ready to tick.

A notes app with tables on Mac

Type /table and you get a table like Notion's simple ones. Type in any cell, and use Tab and Return to move around. Grab a row's or column's handle to pick it, open its menu (colour, insert, duplicate, clear, delete, header row or column) or drag it somewhere else.

Drag a cell's edge to make a column wider or a row taller. Bars under and beside the table add a row or a column. Drag across cells to clear, colour or copy them, and paste a spreadsheet straight in. Pick words in a cell for a small toolbar: colour, background, bold, italic, underline, link.

Tables are kept in the page as simple GitHub-style tables, so Koi can read and write them too, and they export to Word and PDF as real tables.

11 chart types, drawn from a small table

Type /chart and pick the kind from a pill on it:

  • Bar, horizontal bar and stacked bar
  • Line, area, and bar and line
  • Pie and donut
  • Scatter, heatmap and radar

Each chart is drawn from a small table of its own that opens under it, called Data. Change a number and the chart follows. Ask Koi to chart a table and it will, and charts export to Word and PDF as the chart drawn.

A notes app with LaTeX equations

Type /equation, or type LaTeX between $$ and $$ as you write, and the equation is drawn right in the page. Click one to change it. Handy for class notes, problem sets, or the one formula in a work doc you'd otherwise screenshot.

Export notes to Word and PDF on Mac

Any page exports to Word or PDF. Tables stay real tables and charts come out as drawn, so a page can go straight to someone who has never heard of Koi.

Koi writes and edits pages on a call

Hold Fn + ⌘ and ask: “make me a page comparing these plans”. Koi writes a whole page, tables and all, and opens it. On a page, it can write where your cursor is, add a summary, turn lines into headings or lists, or change several places at once.

That part is a call with Koi, the AI assistant that sees your screen, so it goes online while the call lasts. Typing, dictating and the pages themselves don't.

Calls land here too. Record a call and it becomes a page: the video, then You and Them in turns. Turn on call notes and Koi adds a title, a short summary and your to-dos above them.

What can you use a Mac notes app like this for?

  • Class notes with the equations written properly, not pasted in as screenshots.
  • A plan or a budget, with a table and a chart drawn from it.
  • Meeting notes from a recorded call: the video, the transcript, and Koi's summary if you want one.
  • A to-do list for the week, ticked off as you go.
  • A first draft you dictated, then tidied up with the keyboard.
  • A page Koi wrote for you on a call, like a comparison of three plans.

And when a page needs to leave the Mac, it goes as a Word file or a PDF, and only when you export it.

History, groups and Recently Deleted

Every page sits in one list in the sidebar, marked by how it began: typed, dictated or a call. Make groups and name them. Rename, archive or delete any page. A deleted page waits in Recently Deleted for 30 days, then it's gone.

A new history starts with Koi's guide: a few example pages, a saved call and a dictation. They're ordinary pages, to keep, change or delete.

A private notes app: local files, no cloud

Your pages, history and pictures are local files on your Mac. There's no sync and no copy anywhere else, and Koi's server never keeps what you write. Our trust page lists what stays on your Mac.

The trade-off is real. Your notes aren't on your iPhone or another Mac, there's no sharing a page with a team, and Koi has no iPhone app. Back them up the way you back up the rest of your Mac.

Pages come with every plan, Free included. See the plans for what changes when you pay: more time with Koi and more recorded calls.
