What Gizmo is

Gizmo calls itself AI quizzes that make studying easy. Its help center explains the idea: Magic Import turns a PDF, pasted notes, a YouTube link or a recorded lesson into flashcards. Memorise mode quizzes you with spaced repetition, an AI tutor explains things step by step, and Gizmo Live turns a deck into a multiplayer quiz with a game code. XP, levels, leagues, streaks and a Monster Hunt keep score.

Its App Store page adds imports from Anki and Quizlet, PowerPoint files and photos of handwritten notes. It runs on iPhone and iPad (iOS 16.4 or later), and there's an Android app. No Mac app is listed. The App Store lists ten Gizmo Unlimited purchases from $6.99 to $309.99 without saying what each covers, and we couldn't find a pricing page on Gizmo's own site.

We make Koi, so read this with that in mind. Every fact about another app comes from its own site, help center or app store page, checked October 21, 2026. We didn't run tests.

Why people look for a Gizmo alternative

  • They study on a Mac and want a real app there, not only a phone.
  • The pricing is hard to read before you're in the app.
  • Leagues, streaks and monsters aren't how they like to study.
  • They want the notes and the cards together, so the explanation sits beside the question.
  • They'd rather keep their material on their own computer.

When Gizmo is still the better pick

Stay on Gizmo if

  • You study on your phone in short bursts. Koi has no iPhone or Android app.
  • Streaks and leagues keep you going. Koi has no game layer.
  • You run quizzes with friends or a class through Gizmo Live. Koi has no multiplayer and no shared decks.
  • You make cards from YouTube videos or photos of handwritten notes. Koi does neither.
  • You want to import your Anki or Quizlet decks. Koi has no deck import.

6 Gizmo alternatives, ranked

1. Koi

Best for: AI flashcards from PDFs, slides and lectures, on a Mac

Koi does Gizmo's main trick, cards written for you from your material, in a native Mac app. Import a PDF, a Word file or PowerPoint slides and choose Make study notes: Koi writes a page with a summary, the key points, flashcards and a multiple-choice quiz. Tap Fn + ⌃, pick In person, and a recorded class gets the same once you say yes.

Studying is quiet: a Study pill opens one card at a time, Space for the back, then Again, Hard, Good or Easy, or 1 to 4. Each card comes back when it's due, spaced out the way Anki does it. Tap Fn + ⌘ and say “quiz me on what I got wrong” when you want to be tested on your misses.

Your pages and when each card is due stay on your Mac. Making cards uses Koi's AI, which is online; studying them doesn't. Where it loses: no phone, no games, no shared decks, no free plan. Pro is $20 a month or $192 a year after a 3-day trial, or Lifetime from $59 once.

2. Knowt

Best for: Free study modes, with AI on a paid plan

Knowt's help center lists Learn, practice tests, spaced repetition and Match as free on your own sets, and it imports Quizlet. Free gets one AI summary a month of a PDF, video, slides or lecture; Ultra, $24.99 a month or $149.99 a year, makes them unlimited. Web, iPhone and Android. See our Knowt alternatives.

3. Quizlet

Best for: Shared sets and classroom games

Quizlet builds sets from notes you type, paste or upload, and has Learn and practice tests. Web, iPhone and iPad; the App Store lists Plus from $9.99 as an in-app purchase, with monthly limits on its premium tools. No Mac app. More in our Quizlet alternatives for Mac.

4. StudyFetch

Best for: A voice tutor built around your uploads

StudyFetch makes flashcards, quizzes and notes from lectures, PDFs, slides and videos, records classes, and has Sparky, a tutor you talk to. Free to start; the App Store lists Premium at $19.99 a month or $96 a year. Web, iPhone, iPad and Android. See our StudyFetch alternatives.

5. Anki

Best for: Free, serious spaced repetition with a Mac app

Anki is free on Mac, Windows, Linux and Android with free sync, and AnkiMobile is $24.99 once on iPhone. Your collection lives on your device. You write every card, which is slow but makes you think. More in our Anki alternatives.

6. RemNote

Best for: Notes and cards on every device

RemNote has apps for Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android. Free includes 5 AI cards from text, PDFs or slides; Pro with AI, $18 a month, adds AI flashcards, quizzes and summaries from PDFs and a lecture recorder. Pro without the AI is $8 a month.

How to make AI flashcards from a PDF in Koi

  1. Choose Import in the Documents window, or File, Import… in the menu bar, and pick the PDF, Word file or slides. Koi reads it on your Mac into a page.
  2. Choose Make study notes from the page's document menu.
  3. A new page opens with a summary, the key points, flashcards and a multiple-choice quiz.
  4. Click the Study pill over the flashcards. Press Space for the back, then 1 to 4 for Again, Hard, Good or Easy.

The page's words, up to 120,000 characters, go to Koi's AI to do it, and what comes back is kept only in the new page on your Mac. Or tap Fn + ⌘ on any page and say “make flashcards from this page”. The full guide: how to make flashcards from a PDF on a Mac.

Gizmo's AI tutor and Koi's Study mode

Gizmo's tutor explains topics step by step and quizzes you on your content. Koi's Study mode works on the problem in front of you. Turn it on in Settings, under Koi, or from the menu bar, then tap Fn + ⌘ and ask. Koi looks at your screen, circles where your working went wrong, asks what you'd try next and draws only the next step. Each miss becomes a card on a page called “What I got wrong”.

Study mode is a call with Koi, the assistant that sees your screen: your voice and, unless you turn it off, a picture of your screen go to the AI provider while it lasts. More in our guide to an AI tutor that sees your screen.
