How to dictate in any app

Tap Fn + ⌥ in any app and talk. Your words land where the cursor is, written on your Mac, and Koi stops when you go quiet.

By Irakli, founder ·

How to do it

  1. Click into the field you want to write in: a message, an email, a document, a code editor.
  2. Tap Fn + ⌥ and start talking. The dock's Dictate button turns into red sound bars while it listens.
  3. Stop talking and Koi stops by itself, or tap Fn + ⌥ again.
  4. Say "new line", "new paragraph" or "clear all" on its own, after a pause, to do it rather than type it.

Worth knowing

  • Dictation runs on your Mac with Whisper, so it works offline. 57 languages, picked by itself.
  • Ums, stammers and a corrected number ("3, no, 4") are tidied away. Settings, Dictation turns tidying off.
  • Settings, Dictation, Type in English types English whatever language you speak (the Small and Base models).
  • Nothing typed? Koi needs Accessibility: System Settings, Privacy & Security, Accessibility, switch Koi on.
  • The keys are yours to change in Settings, Shortcuts.
