The best Alter alternatives for Mac

The best Alter alternative is Koi if you want a voice-first Mac assistant without managing keys or models: select text, say what to change, and it rewrites it in place, and it can point at and click things on your screen. Raycast AI and BoltAI suit people who want their own keys and local models. Alter itself is free with your own keys, and Pro is $240 a year.

What is Alter?

Alter is a Mac AI assistant that lives in the notch. Its pitch is that the fastest way to use your Mac is not to touch the keyboard: you talk or dictate, it uses what's on your screen and in your apps, and it runs one of more than 80 built-in actions, or your own, and puts the answer back where you were working. It records meetings with speaker names and summaries, connects to Calendar, Maps and, on Pro, more than 2,000 services, and picks among 50+ AI models for each task.

Its big draw is choice. Every feature is free if you bring your own API keys or run local models through Ollama or LM Studio. Its site says chats stay encrypted and local and that it doesn't train on your data. It's a universal app for Apple silicon and Intel; its site lists macOS 14 in one place and Ventura 13 in another.

This page is about Alter at alterhq.com. We make Koi, the first pick below, so read it with that in mind. Prices and features for every app come from their own sites, checked October 21, 2026, in USD.

How much does Alter cost?

  • Free: every feature, with your own AI keys or local models. No card.
  • Local+: $29 a year for better local speech models, Whisper Pro and Parakeet V3, on up to 3 devices.
  • Pro: $240 a year for Alter's own access to 50+ cloud models, unlimited meeting recordings with speaker names, and 2,000+ connected tools.
  • Lifetime: $720 once, everything in Pro.
  • Every new account starts with 7 days of unlimited cloud models, with no card.

Read the pricing page's small print. Pro and Lifetime run on a monthly fair-use budget, and past it requests go to cheaper models. Every plan allows only one active device at a time, and heavy agent use, like coding agents, isn't allowed. On Free, meeting recording with local Whisper is marked as very slow.

Why people look for an Alter alternative

  • Free means setup. To use it free you sign up with AI providers, paste keys and pay them, or run local models on your Mac.
  • Pro is $240 a year, with a fair-use budget that switches you to cheaper models once you pass it.
  • One active device at a time, on every plan.
  • You wanted something that shows you on the screen. Alter answers and acts; its site doesn't mention pointing at buttons or drawing over the screen.
  • So many models and actions is more than you want to manage.

Stay on Alter if

  • You want to pick the model, use your own keys, or run everything on local models. Koi's assistant does none of that.
  • You want it free, and you're happy to pay your AI provider or run models yourself.
  • You rely on its 2,000+ connected services, or your own custom actions.
  • You want to pay once for the cloud models too. Alter's Lifetime includes them.

6 Alter alternatives for Mac in 2026

1. Koi

Best for: Writing fixed in any app by voice, with an AI that points and clicks

Koi is the nearest match to Alter's voice-first idea, without the setup. Tap Fn + ⌘ once and talk; Koi answers out loud. Select text anywhere and say “fix the grammar” or “reply that I'll be late”, and Koi rewrites it in place: the changed words are highlighted and ⌘Z takes it back. It looks at your screen with each question (or only when you ask, or never), circles the button you need, sketches a diagram over the screen, and clicks and types around the Mac with its own pointer.

Tap Fn + ⌥ for dictation that runs on your Mac, in 100 languages, offline and unlimited, with the ums taken out. Koi also records calls with no bot, transcribed on your Mac, and keeps a document editor and a calendar. It never buys, sends, posts, deletes or signs in for you; the app enforces that.

Where Alter is ahead: no model picker in Koi, no keys of your own, no local model for the assistant, and no 2,000-service catalog. Pro is $20 a month, or $192 a year, after a 3-day trial that needs a card; Lifetime is paid once, from $59, with Koi credit included. It works on every Mac you use, on macOS 14 or later, Apple silicon and Intel.

2. Raycast AI

Best for: Keyboard people who want many models in a launcher

Raycast puts AI in its launcher: Quick AI, AI Chat, AI Commands for saved prompts like fixing spelling, AI Extensions for your apps, agents with memory and automations on a schedule. Screen Awareness adds what's on your screen, and it takes your own keys or a local model through Ollama.

The Free plan has no AI; Pro is $10 a month with 500 AI credits (Raycast pricing). Its AI needs macOS Tahoe and Apple silicon. See Raycast AI alternatives.

3. BoltAI

Best for: Paying once and bringing your own keys

BoltAI is a native Mac chat app with an overlay on a global shortcut, inline edits in any app, dictation, a screenshot-to-answer command, MCP servers, and local models through Ollama or LM Studio. Chats stay on your Mac.

It's bought once, from $79, with a year of updates (BoltAI pricing). It includes no AI, so you bring keys or local models, as with Alter's free plan. macOS 13 or later. See BoltAI alternatives.

4. HeyClicky

Best for: A voice that draws on your screen, free to start

HeyClicky sees your screen when you press its hotkey, answers out loud, draws on the screen to point the way, and runs agents for tasks. Dictation comes with every plan.

Free gives 25 talk and 25 agent messages a month; Pro is $20 a month (HeyClicky pricing). Everything runs in its cloud, and there are no local models. macOS 14.2 or later.

5. VoiceOS

Best for: Dictation and a voice agent, on Mac and Windows

VoiceOS pairs dictation in 100 languages with styles and your own words, edits selected text by voice, and has an Agent Mode with web search, reminders, screen awareness and your own MCP servers, asking before it acts.

Pro is $11.99 a month billed yearly, after a 7-day trial that needs a card; no free plan (VoiceOS pricing). Mac and Windows. Compared in Koi vs VoiceOS.

6. Apple Intelligence (Writing Tools and Siri AI)

Best for: Rewriting and proofreading built into newer Macs

If what you used Alter for was fixing text, macOS may already do it. Writing Tools rewrites selected text as Friendly, Professional or Concise, proofreads it, summarizes it, or makes a change you describe. On macOS 27, Siri AI, in beta, also answers about what's on your screen.

It's built in, but needs a Mac with Apple Intelligence, in a supported language and region. Features that use Apple's servers have daily limits, and Apple says expanded access will cost a fee later.

How to rewrite text in any app: the built-in way and Koi's

With Apple's Writing Tools, on a Mac with Apple Intelligence:

  1. Select the text.
  2. Control-click it and choose Writing Tools, then Show Writing Tools.
  3. Click Rewrite, Proofread or a tone, or describe the change you want.
  4. Check the result and keep it.

With Koi, on any Mac from macOS 14:

  1. Select the text in any app: Mail, Slack, a browser, Notes.
  2. Tap Fn + ⌘ once.
  3. Say what you want: “make it friendlier”, “shorter”, “fix the grammar”.
  4. Koi replaces it in place and highlights the changed words.
  5. Not right? Press ⌘Z to get the original back, or ask again.

What leaves your Mac

With Alter on local models, nothing has to leave your Mac for the AI. On your own keys, your prompts go to the provider you chose, and on Pro to the models Alter routes you to.

Koi's dictation, call recording and transcription run on your Mac and send nothing. Talking to Koi is online: your voice goes to the AI provider, and a picture of the screen goes with each question unless you change that. When Koi rewrites text, the selected text goes along with the question. Our server keeps what each call cost, not what was said or shown. See the trust page.
