VoiceInk vs Superwhisper

Pick VoiceInk if you dictate on one Apple silicon Mac and want to pay $25 once for an open source app. Pick Superwhisper if you need Windows, Android, an Intel Mac, file transcription or AI modes; Pro is $8.49 a month or $249.99 once.

VoiceInk vs Superwhisper: which is better?

  • VoiceInk is better value. $25 once for one Mac, open source, with your voice kept on the Mac. If you only dictate on one Apple silicon Mac, it's hard to argue with.
  • Superwhisper is better if you need more than one platform, an Intel Mac that leans on the cloud, file transcription, or many AI modes. One license covers Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.
  • Both have a free way in: Superwhisper's free plan, VoiceInk's free trial.

We make Koi, another Mac dictation app, mentioned at the end. Neither of these is ours. Facts are from VoiceInk's site and GitHub page and Superwhisper's site and docs, checked October 16, 2026. No tests were run.

VoiceInk is a tenth of Superwhisper's lifetime price. What the extra buys is every platform under one key, cloud models, file transcription and AI modes. If you need none of those, the difference is just money.

Where VoiceInk is better

  • Price. $25 once, with lifetime updates.
  • Open source. VoiceInk is built in public on GitHub, so you can read the code that hears you.
  • Local by design. Its site says voice data never leaves your Mac, and cloud enhancement sends only text.

Where Superwhisper is better

  • Platforms. Windows and Android as well as Mac and iPhone, on one license.
  • Intel Macs. VoiceInk doesn't run on them at all; Superwhisper does, best with cloud models.
  • Files. Pro transcribes audio and video files.
  • Modes. Message, Email, Formal, Casual, Legal, Chat and your own, each with its model.
  • A free plan with unlimited local dictation, not just a trial.
  • A longer refund window: 30 days to VoiceInk's 14.

And Koi?

Koi sits between them on one point: it runs Whisper on your Mac like VoiceInk, but on Intel Macs too, with macOS 14 or later. Tap Fn + ⌥ and words appear while you speak; it also records calls on the Mac and has an assistant that uses cloud AI. It costs more than both: no free plan, Pro at $20 a month after a 3-day trial that needs a card, or Lifetime from $59. It's Mac only, with 57 languages and no snippets or file transcription. More in Superwhisper alternatives and lifetime dictation apps.
