Rev alternatives for AI and human transcription

For AI transcripts without uploading, Koi, MacWhisper and Aiko transcribe on your Mac, and TurboScribe is unlimited in the cloud for $20 a month. If you need a person to type it, Happy Scribe offers human transcripts from $2 a minute. Koi doesn't do human transcription.

Rev sells two different things

Rev is known for human transcription: you upload a recording and a person types it, at $1.99 a minute, with 99%+ accuracy guaranteed and delivery in 12 hours or less (rush can be as fast as 2 hours, its FAQ says). It also sells AI transcription by subscription, plus legal transcripts, captions and subtitles.

From Rev's pricing page:

  • Free: 45 AI minutes a month, English only, one user.
  • Essentials: $29.99 a month, or $25.49 a month billed yearly, with 5,000 AI minutes per user, in English and Spanish.
  • Pro: $59.99 a month, or $47.99 a month billed yearly, with 10,000 AI minutes per user and 37+ languages.
  • Human transcription and human captions: from $1.99 a minute. Human captions are English and Spanish only.

People look for an alternative for a few reasons:

  • Human transcription at $1.99 a minute is about $119 for a one-hour interview.
  • The free AI plan is 45 minutes a month, and only in English.
  • Every file is uploaded, and a person may hear it.
  • They want transcripts on their Mac, offline, without counting minutes.

One thing up front: Koi doesn't do human transcription, and neither do the local apps on this list. If you need a person to type a deposition or certify a transcript, the honest alternatives are other human services, and we name one below. We make Koi, so read this with that in mind. Facts about the others come from their own sites, checked October 21, 2026; we ran no accuracy tests.

Do you need a human, or is AI enough?

Pay for a human when a mistake costs real money or trouble: court and legal work, published quotes, research data that gets coded line by line, or audio so noisy that AI gives up. Rev's legal transcripts are sold by the page for that reason.

For everything else (your own interviews, lectures, meetings, voice memos, podcasts you'll skim) AI is usually close enough, and a quick read with the audio beside it fixes the rest. Local apps make that pass easy: in Koi, every line has its time, and clicking it plays the sound from there.

6 Rev alternatives, AI and human

1. Koi

Best for: AI transcripts on your Mac, with no minutes to count

Koi transcribes audio and video files on your Mac: m4a, mp3, wav, aiff, caf, mp4, mov, m4v and voice memos. Nothing is uploaded, it works offline, and there's no limit on minutes. The page has a line under each timestamp, the sound to play back, and Export for Subtitles (SRT) or (VTT), plus Word and PDF. Say yes to “Summarize this recording?” for a title, a summary and your to-dos; only the words go to Koi's AI for that.

It also records the conversation in the first place. Tap Fn + ⌃, pick Online call for Zoom, Meet or Teams, and Koi records it on your Mac with no bot, as You and Them; pick In person for an interview across the table. 100 languages between the built-in Parakeet and the Whisper models you can download.

The gaps: no human transcription, no speaker names in a file, no legal formatting, and Mac only. Pro is $20 a month or $192 a year after a 3-day trial that needs a card, or Lifetime from $59, paid once.

2. Happy Scribe

Best for: AI or human, in far more languages

Happy Scribe is the closest thing to Rev that isn't Rev. Its AI covers 150+ languages and dialects, and human-reviewed transcripts, at 99% accuracy per its site, start from $2 a minute ($1.90 on Business), in 65+ languages. Basic is $17 a month for 120 AI minutes, or $8.50 a month billed yearly. Recordings are stored in the EU.

The weakness: still an upload, and the AI plans are metered. See our Happy Scribe alternatives.

3. TurboScribe

Best for: Unlimited AI transcripts for a flat price

TurboScribe runs Whisper on its servers: 98+ languages, speaker labels, and PDF, DOCX, TXT, CSV, SRT and VTT exports. Unlimited is $20 a month or $10 a month billed yearly, with files up to 10 hours; free is 3 files a day of up to 30 minutes.

The weakness: AI only, and it's a website, so you upload.

4. MacWhisper

Best for: Local transcripts with speakers told apart

MacWhisper transcribes on your Mac with Whisper and Parakeet, in 100 languages, and can tell up to 8 speakers apart, which helps with interviews. It exports .txt, .md, .pdf, .html, .docx, .srt and .vtt. The free version transcribes files; Pro is €64 once.

The weakness: AI only, and version 15.2 needs macOS 15, TidBITS reports.

5. Aiko

Best for: A simple local app, paid once

Aiko transcribes on your device with Whisper large v2 on a Mac, in 100 languages, and exports text, SRT, JSON and CSV. It's $24 once for Mac, iPhone and Vision Pro, with a 14-day trial.

The weakness: no speaker labels and no editing inside the app.

6. Otter

Best for: A cloud notetaker for meetings

If you used Rev mostly for meetings, Otter records and transcribes them in the cloud, with a Notetaker that can join calls or a desktop app that records without one. Its free plan has 300 minutes a month, up to 30 minutes each.

The weakness: six languages on its pricing table, and everything goes to its cloud. Our Otter AI alternatives page covers local options.

Ordering from Rev vs transcribing in Koi

With Rev, you upload the file, choose AI or human, pay per minute or use your plan's minutes, and wait: AI comes back fast, a person in 12 hours or less. With Koi, nothing leaves the Mac:

  1. Click Tools on Koi's dock and pick Transcribe a file, or choose File, Transcribe Audio or Video… in the menu bar.
  2. A page named after the file opens and fills in as it's heard, with Cancel in the card at its foot.
  3. Read it with the sound: click any time to play from there, and fix words as you go.
  4. Open the page's menu, Export, for Word, PDF or Subtitles (SRT) or (VTT).

What an hour of audio costs

Rough numbers from the prices above, for one hour of audio. Rev human: $119.40 at $1.99 a minute. Happy Scribe human: from $120 at $2 a minute. Rev AI: part of a $29.99 a month plan with 5,000 minutes. TurboScribe: part of $20 a month with no cap. MacWhisper and Aiko: nothing after the one-time price. Koi: nothing extra on any plan, since files, calls and dictation have no limit.

If you send Rev a few hours a month for human work, keep doing that for the files that need it, and do the rest locally. That mix is usually the cheapest.

Who hears your recording?

With any human service, a person listens to your audio; that's the product. With cloud AI, the file sits on the company's servers. With a local app, it stays on your Mac. Koi reads the file there, doesn't move or change it, and only sends the transcript's words if you ask for a summary. For interviews with sources, patients or clients, that's often the deciding fact. More on recording such calls in our guide to recording meetings on a Mac.

What 99% accurate means for a transcript

Rev guarantees 99%+ for human transcripts, and Happy Scribe says 99% for its human-reviewed ones. At 150 words a minute, an hour of talk is about 9,000 words, so 99% still leaves around 90 to check. AI transcripts miss more, especially with accents, crosstalk and bad microphones, and no app here publishes a number we could check, so we won't quote one.

What helps more than the model is the review. In Koi, each line sits under its time, and clicking it plays the sound from there, so you can listen only where a line looks wrong. Fix the word and the times stay right, so subtitles you export afterwards carry your fix. Clean audio helps everyone: a headset on a call, the phone close to the speaker in a room.

What to check before leaving Rev

  • Download your transcripts and captions from your Rev account first.
  • Check your languages. Rev's AI covers English on Free, English and Spanish on Essentials, 37+ on Pro. Koi, MacWhisper and Aiko list about 100.
  • Check your file types. Koi reads m4a, mp3, wav, aiff, caf, mp4, mov and m4v, and voice memos.
  • Check whether anything still needs a person. Keep Rev, or Happy Scribe, for those files.

Get a better file before you transcribe it

Half of transcript quality is the recording. If you record interviews on your Mac, Koi can do that part too: Online call for Zoom, Meet, Teams or FaceTime, with your side and theirs kept apart, or In person for a conversation across a table, through your microphone. Either way it's written down as it happens, so there's no file to upload afterwards. See recording an in-person meeting on a Mac.
