Transcribe audio and video on your Mac
Transcribe voice memos, mp3, m4a, mp4 and mov files on your Mac, offline, with timestamps you can click, a summary if you want one, and SRT or VTT export.
If you want a TurboScribe alternative that doesn't upload your files, Koi, MacWhisper and Aiko transcribe audio and video on your Mac, and Buzz does it free and open source. Koi adds call recording and dictation; MacWhisper adds speaker labels. Happy Scribe is another web service with a human option.

TurboScribe is a website: you upload an audio or video file, its servers run Whisper on it, and you get a transcript back. It takes most formats, from MP3, M4A and WAV to MP4, MOV and MKV, handles 98+ languages, labels speakers if you tick a box, and exports PDF, DOCX, TXT, CSV and SRT or VTT subtitles. Its own FAQ says files and transcripts are stored encrypted and only you can see them.
The free plan transcribes 3 files a day, each up to 30 minutes, one at a time and at lower priority. Unlimited is $20 a month, or $10 a month billed yearly at $120, with files up to 10 hours or 5 GB and 50 uploads at once. Prices and limits are from TurboScribe's pricing page.
That's a good deal for a lot of people. People look elsewhere when:
We make Koi, one of the apps below, so read this with that in mind. We didn't run accuracy tests. Every fact about another app comes from its own site, checked October 21, 2026.
The list
Best for: Files transcribed on your Mac, plus calls and dictation in the same app
Drop a voice memo, an interview or a video on Koi and it's written down on your Mac, a line under each timestamp, with the sound on the page to play back. Nothing is uploaded, so it works offline, and there's no limit on minutes. Click a time and the sound jumps there. Export Subtitles (SRT) or (VTT) from the page's menu, or say yes to “Summarize this recording?” for a title, a summary and your to-dos, which sends the words, never the sound, to Koi's AI.
It reads m4a, mp3, wav, aiff, caf, mp4, mov and m4v, in the language you pick, with NVIDIA's Parakeet built in and Whisper and other models a free download away (100 languages between them). The honest gaps next to TurboScribe: no speaker labels in a file, no YouTube links, no translation into 134+ languages, and fewer formats in (no MKV or WMA).
What you get that TurboScribe doesn't do: tap Fn + ⌃ on any call and Koi records it on your Mac, You and Them, with no bot; and dictation types into any app. Koi is Mac only, and not free: Pro is $20 a month or $192 a year after a 3-day trial that needs a card, or Lifetime from $59, paid once.
Best for: Local file transcription with the most export formats
MacWhisper runs Whisper and Parakeet models on your Mac, so files never leave it. It supports 100 languages and exports .txt, .md, .pdf, .html, .docx, plus .srt and .vtt subtitles. The free version transcribes files. Pro is a one-time €64 license with lifetime updates, and the app can tell up to 8 speakers apart and record meetings.
The weakness: version 15.2 needs macOS 15 or later, TidBITS reports, so older Macs are out. Our MacWhisper alternatives page goes deeper.
Best for: The simplest local transcriber, paid once
Aiko turns audio and video into text on your device with Whisper large v2 on a Mac, in 100 languages, and exports plain text, SRT, JSON and CSV. It's $24 once for Mac, iPhone, iPad and Vision Pro, with a 14-day full trial through TestFlight.
It's small on purpose: no speaker labels, no editing in the app, no batch mode (its site shows a Shortcuts workaround) and no .ogg files. See our Aiko alternatives.
Best for: Free and open source, offline
Buzz transcribes and translates audio offline with Whisper, in more than 90 languages, and exports CSV, SRT, TXT and VTT. Buzz Classic is free and open source on GitHub for Windows, Linux and Intel Macs; a separate Buzz on macOS has a native Mac look and is sold through the Mac App Store.
The weakness is polish: setup is more hands-on than a website, and the free build's site lists only Intel for macOS.
Best for: Dictation first, files on the side
Superwhisper is a dictation app with local Whisper models and 100+ languages. Transcribing audio and video files is a Pro feature, $8.49 a month on its site, alongside cloud models and your own API keys. Its FAQ says offline models run well only on Apple silicon.
The weakness for TurboScribe users: files aren't its main job, and they aren't on the free tier.
Best for: Another web service, with a human option
If uploading is fine and you want a different site, Happy Scribe covers 150+ languages, keeps recordings in the EU, and can have a person proofread a transcript from $2 a minute. Basic is $17 a month for 120 minutes, or $8.50 a month billed yearly.
The weakness: minutes are metered, which TurboScribe's Unlimited isn't, and Basic caps a recording at 90 minutes. More in our Happy Scribe alternatives.

Privacy
TurboScribe, Happy Scribe and every other web transcriber work the same way: the file goes to their servers, is turned into text there, and stays in your account until you delete it. TurboScribe says that copy is encrypted and private to you. That's a promise about how they store it, not about where it goes.
A local app never sends the file. Koi reads it on your Mac, doesn't move or change it, and keeps the words and a copy of the sound in its own documents on your Mac. The only thing that leaves is the transcript's words, and only if you say yes to a summary. If you record therapy sessions, legal calls or interviews with sources, that difference is usually the whole decision. Our list of Whisper apps for Mac covers more local options.
The tradeoff is speed and scale. TurboScribe runs on GPUs and takes 50 files at once. A local app is only as fast as your Mac.
Models
TurboScribe says it's powered by Whisper, the open speech model from OpenAI, and lets you trade speed for accuracy with its three modes. Because Whisper is open, the same family of models runs on a Mac too. MacWhisper, Aiko, Buzz and Superwhisper all use it, and Koi offers Whisper Base, Small and Large v3 Turbo as free downloads beside its built-in Parakeet.
What differs is the size of the model you run and the hardware under it. TurboScribe picks for you on its GPUs. On a Mac you pick: in Koi, Settings, Dictation, where Parakeet is the fastest and covers 25 European languages, and Large v3 Turbo is the most accurate Whisper. Our post on Koi's speech models explains which to choose. We haven't run accuracy benchmarks, so try your own audio.
Before you switch
Free
TurboScribe's own free plan is already generous for short files. If you want free and local, Buzz Classic is free and open source, and MacWhisper's free version transcribes files on your Mac. Aiko isn't free, but its 14-day trial is the full app. Koi isn't free either: Pro starts with a 3-day trial that needs a card, and every plan transcribes files with no limit. See Koi's plans.
