The 8 best Apple Dictation alternatives for Mac
Looking for an Apple Dictation alternative? 8 picks for Mac, from Superwhisper and Wispr Flow to Koi and Voice Control, with prices, privacy and offline use.
Apple Dictation is free, built in and fine for short messages on an Apple silicon Mac. Whisper, OpenAI's open speech model, runs inside Mac apps instead: it stays on your Mac on any Mac the app supports, detects the language by itself and can learn your words through the app.

Short answer
Whisper isn't an app you download from Apple or OpenAI and press a key in. It's OpenAI's open speech model, and Mac apps build dictation and transcription on top of it. So this page compares Apple's built-in dictation with what Whisper makes possible, then names the apps. We make Koi, one of those apps, so read the last part with that in mind. We didn't run accuracy tests; Apple's facts are from its own pages and the Whisper facts from OpenAI's Whisper repository, checked October 16, 2026.
Side by side
| Apple Dictation | Whisper, in a Mac app | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Built into macOS | An open speech model that apps run |
| Price | Free | The model is free (MIT license); apps range from free to paid |
| Where speech becomes text | On your Mac for 48 locales, after a download; otherwise Apple's servers | On your Mac, in apps that run it locally |
| Intel Macs | Apple's Sonoma guide says Intel dictation goes to Apple | Runs locally where the app supports Intel |
| Languages | 63 locales for Dictation | Around 100 in most apps |
| Picking the language | Add languages, then switch by hand | Detects it by itself |
| Custom words | None documented | Apps add vocabularies on top |
| Punctuation and formatting | Auto-punctuation in 33 locales; polished English on M3 Macs with macOS 27 | Up to the app |
| Translate to English | Not documented | Yes, except the turbo model |
| Stops when | 30 seconds without speech | Depends on the app |
| Needs an install | No, turn it on in Keyboard settings | Yes, an app and a model |
Apple's numbers are from its Dictation guide and feature availability page, which list Dictation in 63 locales, on-device dictation in 48 (“requires download of speech models”) and auto-punctuation in 33. The Intel line is from Apple's macOS Sonoma guide; the current guide just says to check Keyboard settings, which shows whether your dictation is processed on the Mac.
Apple Dictation
It's already on your Mac. Turn it on in System Settings, Keyboard, Dictation, and press the Microphone key or your chosen shortcut. It types into anything, you can dictate text of any length, and it stops after 30 seconds of silence. On Apple silicon you can keep typing while it listens. Words it's unsure about get a blue underline, and a click shows other choices. Say “new line”, “new paragraph”, punctuation or emoji names, and it does them.
macOS 27 moved it forward. Apple's September 14 announcement says dictation now captures speech as polished text, handling capitalization, punctuation and formatting as you speak, on its on-device model AFM Core Advanced. That needs an M3 Mac or later with at least 12GB of unified memory, and the feature page lists this “More advanced Dictation” in nine English locales only.
Where it falls short: no custom word list (Voice Control has one, Dictation doesn't), languages switched by hand, uneven on-device support, and on an Intel Mac your voice goes to Apple. Apple says it doesn't keep that audio unless you opted in to Improve Siri and Dictation. If dictation is broken rather than weak, see how to fix Mac dictation first.
Whisper
Whisper is a speech recognition model OpenAI released with its code and weights under the MIT license. Because anyone can run it, it runs on your Mac with no connection, on any Mac an app supports. It identifies the language you're speaking, and its multilingual models can translate speech into English as they transcribe. OpenAI's own README warns that its performance “varies widely depending on the language”, so a language on the list isn't a promise of equal accuracy.
What Whisper doesn't give you is the app around it: the shortcut, typing into the field you're in, a word list, removing filler words, or deciding when to stop. That's why two Whisper apps can feel nothing alike. One types words while you speak, another waits until you're done; one keeps everything on the Mac, another sends text to a cloud model for cleanup.
Model sizes
Whisper comes in six sizes. Bigger is more accurate and slower. These are OpenAI's figures, with speed measured on a data-center graphics card, not a Mac, so read the speed column as relative only.
| Size | Parameters | Memory it needs | Relative speed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| tiny | 39 M | About 1 GB | About 10× | Old Macs, quick notes in English |
| base | 74 M | About 1 GB | About 7× | Light dictation, older Macs |
| small | 244 M | About 2 GB | About 4× | Everyday dictation |
| medium | 769 M | About 5 GB | About 2× | Accuracy with time to spare |
| large | 1,550 M | About 10 GB | 1× | Files where every word counts |
| turbo | 809 M | About 6 GB | About 8× | Near large accuracy, much faster |
The turbo model is what apps call Large v3 Turbo, and OpenAI says it isn't trained to translate, so speaking Spanish to get English text needs one of the others. The “Best for” column is our reading of OpenAI's numbers, not a test.

A Whisper app
Koi is a Mac app that runs Whisper for dictation. Tap Fn + ⌥ in any app and talk. Small is built in, and Base and Large v3 Turbo are a download away. It all runs on your Mac, on Apple silicon and Intel with macOS 14 or later, so dictation never goes online. It works out which of 57 languages you're speaking, and with Small or Base it can type what you say in English.
The parts Whisper doesn't do, Koi adds on the Mac: words appear while you speak, the ums and stammers are left out, chats and code tools get no full stop at the end, and names on your screen come out spelled right. A word you fix after Koi typed it joins your own word list. Music and loud rooms don't get typed.
Where Apple wins against Koi: it's free and Koi isn't. Koi has no free plan; Pro is $20 a month after a 3-day trial that needs a card, and Lifetime starts at $59 once. Koi also needs an account, runs on the Mac only, detects 57 languages (Apple lists 63 locales, counting regional versions), has no snippets, and doesn't transcribe audio files. Koi's assistant, the other half of the app, uses cloud AI models.
