How to turn on the idle screen

Settings, Notch & tools, Idle screen: after a few minutes with nobody at your Mac, every screen fades to black with the time or a few Kois.

By Irakli, founder ·

How to do it

  1. Open Koi's Settings and go to Notch & tools, or hover the notch, open Tools and click Idle screen.
  2. Under Idle screen, turn on Show an idle screen.
  3. Pick the look: Time, a big calm clock, or Kois, a crowd of little Kois floating about. Try it shows it now.
  4. Pick Start after: 1, 2, 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes.
  5. Leave Music when it plays on to see the song instead while Spotify or Music plays: its cover, its buttons, the time and its lyrics scrolling along.

Worth knowing

  • A move of the mouse or a key brings everything back. With a song up, a key or a click away from its buttons does.
  • Lyrics come from LRCLIB, sent the song's title, artist, album and length once per song. Lyrics on the idle screen turns that off.
  • It waits while a video plays, and never starts during a call or a recording.
  • It's off until you turn it on.
  • It isn't a macOS screen saver, and it doesn't lock your Mac.
  • On a call, ask Koi: "show the idle screen", "turn on the idle screen after 5 minutes", "show the Kois".
