How to read a file aloud, explain or translate it

The notch's Tools tab, Read aloud, reads any document to you in your Mac's own voice. On a call, Koi explains a file, translates it, or takes a receipt or a booking's dates from it.

By Irakli, founder ·

How to do it

  1. Hover the notch, open the Tools tab top left and click Read aloud.
  2. Pick the file: a PDF, a Word file, slides, a text, RTF or Markdown file, or a picture or a scan of text. Your Mac reads it out.
  3. Or select the file in Finder, or open it, tap Fn + ⌘ and say "explain this file", "translate this letter into English", "add this receipt to my expenses" or "put these dates in my calendar".

Worth knowing

  • A translation is a copy of the same kind of file, saved beside the original in its own layout. Ask for a page and it goes in your Koi documents instead.
  • Koi finds a file by its name too: "translate my lease".
  • Explain and translate are on calls only. The calendar's From a file adds a booking's dates without a call.
  • Pictures and scans are read on your Mac. Only the words go to Koi's AI, and Read aloud sends nothing.
