How to use the board on your desktop

An endless board that works like Excalidraw sits on your wallpaper as a widget. Click it and it grows into a big window; Esc folds it back.

By Irakli, founder ·

How to do it

  1. Find the board's widget on your desktop, under your windows. Or hover the notch and click Board.
  2. Click the widget. It grows into a big window with the Mac's red, yellow and green buttons top left. Esc or the red button folds it back.
  3. Pick a tool along the top, or press its letter as in Excalidraw, and draw.
  4. Press Esc, ⌘W or the red button to fold it back onto the desktop, as you left it.

Worth knowing

  • The ⋯ in the widget's corner makes it small, medium or large, puts it back in its corner, or hides it from the desktop. A drag moves it.
  • Tools: hand, select, rectangle, diamond, ellipse, arrow, line, pen, text, sticky notes, tables and eraser. More holds pictures, stickers and icons, the laser pointer, the lasso and bucket fill.
  • Right-click anything for Excalidraw's menu: copy, paste, styles, group (⌘G), layers, flip, link, lock and delete.
  • Pan with the trackpad or space-drag, and zoom by pinching or ⌘-scroll, from a tenth of the size to thirty times.
  • The menu at the top left exports a PNG, a PDF or an SVG, or copies the board as a PNG. Right-click what you picked to copy it as a PNG, an SVG or text.
  • The pill beside the main menu lists your boards: New board, Rename, Duplicate and Delete board.
  • Under Generate, Mermaid to diagram runs on your Mac. Text to diagram and Wireframe to code send what you typed or picked to Koi's AI, only when you ask, and count against your plan's Koi usage.
  • Each board is a file on your Mac, never uploaded. Like any window, Koi's AI sees a board on screen when your screen goes with a question. Delete everything on this Mac, in Settings, Privacy & data, leaves them.
  • On a call with the board in front, ask Koi to draw ("sketch how our app works", "add a step after Idea") and it draws on the board itself: shapes, arrows, sticky notes, text and flowcharts, as one step ⌘Z takes back.
  • Settings, Notch & tools, Board on the desktop turns the widget off.
  • The chat bar at the bottom asks Koi's AI to draw, change or explain the board. Type or dictate; Koi answers above it and draws on the board, each change one undo.
  • Templates, top right, puts a starting board down: couples, a trip planner, system design, kanban, a weekly planner, a comparison table, a mind map, a flowchart, a mood board, or goals and habits.
  • Press G for a table to type in. Tab and Enter move between cells.
