Dictation for ADHD on a Mac: tools and a simple setup

Dictation software for ADHD is ordinary speech to text, used to get words down by talking instead of typing. On a Mac, start with Apple Dictation, which is free, then try an app if you want one key in every app, words that appear as you talk, or the ums taken out. This is a guide to tools, not medical advice.

Is dictation software good for ADHD?

It's a writing tool, not a treatment, and whether it suits you is personal. What it changes is how words get onto the page: you say them instead of typing them. If typing is where you stall, that's worth a try, and on a Mac the first try is free.

This page is about tools and setup. It isn't medical advice, and nothing here says dictation does anything for ADHD itself. For that, talk to a doctor or a specialist you trust.

What to look for in dictation software

Beyond how accurate it is, the differences that matter day to day are small and practical:

  • How it starts. One key that works the same in every app is less to remember than a different button in each one.
  • When you see the words. Some apps type as you speak, others drop everything in when you stop. Pick whichever pulls your attention less.
  • How it stops. A key, or a pause. Check how long a pause it allows, so it doesn't stop while you're still thinking.
  • How easy it is to undo. A quick way to take back what it just typed makes a false start cheap.
  • Where your words end up. An app that keeps what you said means a thought you dictated is still there later.
  • Where your voice goes. Some apps turn speech into text on your Mac, others in the cloud.
  • What it costs. Free, a subscription or a one-time price, and whether there's a cap on words.

How to set up free dictation on a Mac

Every Mac has Dictation built in. These steps follow Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27, checked October 16, 2026.

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Keyboard, go to Dictation and turn it on.
  2. Look at the Shortcut menu under Dictation and pick one you'll remember, such as pressing Fn twice.
  3. Click into any text field, press the shortcut and talk. Press Escape when you're done.

Apple Dictation has no time limit and stops by itself after 30 seconds without speech. Our guide on how to dictate on a Mac has every step and the spoken commands.

It helps to hear your writing back, too. Your Mac can read selected text out loud: choose Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Read & Speak (Spoken Content on older versions of macOS) and turn on Speak selection. Then select text and press Option-Esc to hear it, and press it again to stop. That's from Apple's guide to having your Mac speak text.

Simple ways to talk a draft out

A few habits that make dictation easier to stick with, whatever app you use:

  • Talk first, fix later. Say the whole thought, then edit with the keyboard, rather than stopping to correct each word.
  • One message, one dictation. Start, say the email or the reply, stop. Then the next.
  • Say it the way you'd explain it to a friend. You can tidy the wording after.
  • Say “new paragraph” when the subject changes, so the draft is easier to read back.
  • Keep one place to dump ideas: a single note you always dictate into, so nothing gets scattered.
  • Read it back before you send it, out loud with Speak selection if that helps.

Where Koi fits

We make Koi, a Mac app, so weigh this part with that in mind. Here's how it answers the list above:

  • One key in every app. Tap Fn + ⌥ once and talk, in Mail, Slack, a browser or a document. Tap again to stop.
  • Words appear while you speak, or all at once when you finish, if you'd rather.
  • It stops when you go quiet, and you can change when listening stops in Settings.
  • The ums and stammers go, on the Mac. It's a switch called Tidy what I say.
  • Say “clear all” on its own and Koi takes back what that dictation wrote, and nothing that was there before.
  • A place for ideas. New document on Koi's dock opens a fresh page: start talking. Your dictations are kept in Recents on your Mac.
  • While the microphone is on, the dock shows red sound bars with “Talk, I'll type it” beside it, so you can see it's listening.

The speech model runs on your Mac, so dictation never goes online. There's no weekly cap on words on any plan. Koi runs on macOS 14 or later, Apple silicon and Intel. More on the dictation page and the documents it saves to.

When Koi isn't the right pick

  • There's no free plan. Pro is $20 a month, or $192 a year, after a 3-day free trial that needs a card. Lifetime is paid once: $59 for the first 25 buyers, rising to $199. Apple Dictation is free.
  • It's Mac only. If you want to dictate on your phone too, look at an app that runs on both.
  • It needs an account, just an email, and a few permissions before the first dictation.
