How to dictate in Notion on a Mac

To dictate in Notion on a Mac, click into a block and start Apple Dictation with the Microphone key, your Dictation shortcut or Edit > Start Dictation, then talk. Notion's own voice input only talks to Notion AI, so for your own words in a page, use Mac dictation or a dictation app like Koi.

How do I dictate in Notion on a Mac?

A Notion block is a text field, so the Mac's own Dictation types into it, in the Notion app and in Notion in a browser. The steps follow Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27, checked October 21, 2026.

  1. Turn on Dictation once: Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard, then turn on Dictation and click Enable.
  2. In Notion, click into the block where the words should go: a paragraph, a bullet, a to-do or a toggle.
  3. Press the Microphone key, your Dictation shortcut, or choose Edit > Start Dictation.
  4. Talk when the cursor pulses or you hear the tone.
  5. Press Escape or your shortcut to stop. It also stops by itself after 30 seconds of silence.

Say punctuation by name, like “comma” or “question mark”. In supported languages Dictation adds commas and full stops by itself, and you can turn that off with Auto-punctuation in the same Keyboard settings. Every command is in our guide on how to dictate on a Mac.

Does Notion have voice typing?

Not into your pages. Notion's April 6, 2026 release brought voice input for Notion AI to the desktop app, to make it easier to work with Notion's Agent. That's talking to Notion's AI, which then writes or edits for you, not dictation that types your own words into a block.

On Notion's pricing page, the full Notion AI comes with Business, from $20 a member a month, and Free and Plus get a limited trial. Notion's AI Meeting Notes, which transcribe a meeting, are on Business too. To put your own words on a page, you still need dictation: Apple's, or an app like Koi.

Bullets, to-dos and headings while you dictate

Notion turns a few characters at the start of a block into formatting, from its keyboard shortcuts page: a dash, star or plus and a space makes a bullet, “1.” and a space a numbered list, two square brackets and a space a to-do, and a hash and a space a heading. Shift+Return is a line break inside the same block.

That gives you a simple way to dictate structured notes:

  1. Type the shortcut yourself, like a dash and a space for a bullet.
  2. Start dictation and say the item.
  3. Stop, press Return for the next bullet, and dictate again.
  4. Press Return twice to leave the list.

Saying “dash” or “hash” out loud is slower than typing the one character, and Notion only turns it into formatting when it's typed at the start of the block. For long thinking, dictate a plain paragraph first and add the structure after.

Dictating in Notion with Koi

We make Koi, so weigh this part with that in mind. Koi's dictation types in any app, Notion included:

  1. Click into a Notion block.
  2. Tap Fn + ⌥ once and talk. Words appear while you speak.
  3. Tap the keys again to stop, or just go quiet and it stops by itself.
  • It tidies as you go. The ums and stammers go, and in English “meet Tuesday, no, Wednesday” comes out as “meet Wednesday”. A switch in Settings, under Dictation, done on the Mac.
  • Say a list. “One, … Two, …” or “First, … Second, …” comes out numbered, a line an item, and “Bullet point, …” with dashes. Koi types a line break as Shift+Return, which Notion keeps inside one block, so for Notion's own bullets use the steps above: type the dash, then dictate each item.
  • “New paragraph” or “new line”, said on its own after a pause, is done rather than typed. “Clear all” takes back only what that dictation wrote.
  • Names spelled right. As you start, the names on your screen, like a project or a teammate on the Notion page in front of you, are read on the Mac and told to the speech model. Never sent, never kept.
  • Your words. Product names and jargon go in Your words, and a word you fix right after Koi typed it is added by itself.
  • Snippets. Save a phrase and its text, like “my Zoom link” and the link, and say the phrase while dictating to type the text.

The speech model runs on your Mac, so what you dictate into Notion isn't sent anywhere to become text, and it works offline, even when Notion itself is waiting for a connection. Setting up the names is in adding words to Mac dictation.

Getting good Notion pages from your voice

  • Talk first, format later. Dictate the whole idea as paragraphs, then turn lines into bullets, toggles or headings with Notion's / menu.
  • Put names on the screen. Koi reads the front window as you start, so a page that already mentions a client or a product helps those come out right.
  • Long notes, no Notion open? Dictate into a Koi document on your Mac, then Copy as Markdown from its menu and paste the text into Notion.
  • Recording a meeting? Koi records a call with no bot and writes it onto a Koi document, which you can copy into Notion when you're done.

The last one is covered in recording calls. If you're weighing Notion against keeping your own pages on your Mac, see our offline Notion alternative page.

What Koi doesn't do in Notion

  • It doesn't know Notion's blocks. It types text where your cursor is; it doesn't make toggles, callouts or database entries.
  • A spoken list lands as lines inside one Notion block, not as Notion bullets.
  • We haven't tested every Notion setup, like a database cell or a page in a browser tab. Try yours during the trial.
  • It's Mac only, so it won't help in Notion on your phone.
  • It costs money and Apple Dictation doesn't. Pro is $20 a month, or $192 a year, after a 3-day free trial that needs a card. Lifetime is paid once: $59 for the first 25 buyers, rising to $199. Koi runs on macOS 14 or later, Apple silicon and Intel.

If dictation works in other apps but not in Notion, our guide to fixing Mac dictation has a section on one app only. For other apps, see dictating in Slack and dictating in Obsidian.
