The best Read AI alternatives skip the bot: Koi records your own Mac and keeps the transcript and video there, Granola AI and Jamie take notes from your computer's audio, and Otter and Fathom have bot-free modes. If you only want Read AI gone, switch off Add Read? or type Opt Out in the meeting chat.

What is the best Read AI alternative?

One that never joins anything. Koi records your own Mac, keeps the transcript and a video of the screen there, and only starts when you say so. Granola AI and Jamie take notes from your computer's audio with no bot, and Otter, Fathom and Fireflies AI have desktop apps that skip theirs.

Read AI is a meeting bot plus a “personal AI” that reaches into email and messages. Its plans page lists Mac, Windows and phone apps on every plan, and 5 meeting transcripts a month for free. Pro is $19.75 a user a month, or $15 billed yearly.

We make Koi, so it's first below. It isn't a like-for-like swap: Koi names no one beyond You and Them, has no team workspace, no email or CRM integrations, no free plan, and runs only on a Mac. Everything about the other apps comes from their own sites, checked October 16, 2026.

Why people want a Read AI alternative

Mostly, the bot. Read AI's Trustpilot page scores 1.3 out of 5 from 109 reviews, 90% of them one star. The recurring story is a bot that turns up in meetings nobody invited it to, keeps coming back after it's removed, and asks for wide access to email, calendars and chat. Trustpilot doesn't verify reviews, and Read AI hasn't claimed the profile, so treat it as a pattern of complaints, not proof.

Read AI tells a different story. Its privacy page says it announces itself at the start of every meeting, needs the host's approval to join, deletes a meeting's data when a participant opts out, and doesn't train on your data unless you turn that on. It says it's SOC 2 Type II audited every year.

The plan limits push people too. Free stops at 5 transcripts a month and meetings of an hour, and audio and video playback starts on Enterprise, at $29.75 a user a month, or $22.50 yearly with at least 5 licenses.

How to stop Read AI joining your meetings

If you only want Read AI gone, you may not need a new app. From Read AI's own guide:

  1. In your Read Calendar, pick the meeting and switch off Add Read? a few minutes before it starts. For a recurring meeting you can do it one meeting at a time.
  2. On Google Meet and Microsoft Teams, Read won't join if even one participant says no. On Zoom, only the host decides.
  3. In a live meeting, the host can remove Read like any participant. Anyone can type Opt Out in the chat to make it leave with nothing saved, or Read Stop to end it with a report so far.
  4. If someone else brought it, Read's chat message names the person who added it. Ask them to take it off.

If it still shows up under your name, remove Read AI from the connected apps in your Google or Microsoft account, so it can't read your calendar any more.

When Read AI is still the better fit

  • You want meeting notes, email and messages searched by one assistant.
  • You'd rather a bot that joins on schedule than remember to start anything.
  • You need Notion, Salesforce, HubSpot or Jira to get the notes on their own.
  • You need speaker names, or apps on Windows and your phone.
  • Five transcripts a month for free covers you.

6 Read AI alternatives with no bot in the call

1. Koi

Best for: Never joining anything, with the call kept on your Mac

Koi isn't in your meeting, so there's nothing to remove, admit or opt out of. It records your Mac: tap Fn + ⌃, pick Online call, and your microphone becomes You while what the Mac plays becomes Them. Each stretch is written down on your Mac with Whisper, and the screen is filmed with both sides' sound. Neither ever leaves your Mac. It doesn't need your email or your calendar to work.

It never starts on its own either. When a call app such as Zoom, Teams or a Meet tab starts using the microphone, the dock asks “Record this call?”, and nothing is heard until you click Record. When the recording ends, Koi asks whether to summarize it. Say yes and the transcript's words, never the audio, go to Koi's AI for a title, a short summary, your to-dos and a follow-up email draft for you to send. Koi never emails the people on the call.

Calls are unlimited on every plan. Pro is $20 a month or $192 a year after a 3-day trial that needs a card, and Lifetime starts at $59 once.

2. Granola AI

Best for: Bot-free notes, with your own jottings blended in

Granola uses your computer's audio, so no bot joins, and you start it yourself for each meeting. It writes notes from the transcript and your rough notes, with chat across meetings. Transcription and summaries happen in the cloud, and audio isn't kept, per its security page.

Basic is free with 30 days of history, and Business is $14 a user a month. Desktop, iPhone, Android and Apple Watch. See our Granola AI alternatives.

3. Jamie

Best for: Bot-free notes that tell people by email

Jamie runs on your device, captures your microphone and the computer's sound, and sends no bot and no invite. What sets it apart for anyone burned by Read AI: a consent email on every plan, so people are told without a bot in the room. Audio is processed in the EU and deleted after transcription, per its security page.

Free gives 10 AI notes a month for meetings up to 30 minutes; Plus is €21 a month billed yearly. Mac, Windows and iPhone.

4. Otter

Best for: A team note taker you can run without its bot

Otter has a Notetaker bot too, but its desktop app for Mac and Windows records without one, in Zoom, Meet, Slack huddles and in person. Transcription is in Otter's cloud. Basic is free with 300 minutes a month and 30 minutes per conversation; Pro is $16.99 a user a month, or $8.33 yearly, on its pricing. More in our Otter AI alternatives.

5. Fathom

Best for: A big free plan, with a bot-free mode on Mac

Fathom's free plan has unlimited recordings and transcriptions, and you can choose bot-free capture on Mac, still in beta. Its bot is the default, so check that setting before your first call. Premium is $20 a month, or $16 yearly. Superhuman bought Fathom in September 2026; our Fathom alternatives page covers what that means.

6. MacWhisper

Best for: Local transcripts with up to 8 speakers, paid once

MacWhisper Pro records meetings on your Mac with local models, splits up to 8 speakers, and transcribes files. Nothing joins the call and nothing needs your email. Pro is €64 once and needs macOS 15. Its meeting recording is in beta, and FaceTime isn't supported, per its docs.

Without a bot, how do people know you're recording?

They don't, unless you tell them. That's the honest trade with every bot-free app. Read AI's bot at least announces itself; Koi doesn't announce itself to the call, and its dock never shows in a screen you share. Jamie's consent email is one answer. Saying “Mind if I record this for my notes?” at the start is another, and it's free.

The law takes this seriously. Some places require everyone on a call to agree. A proposed class action, Chamberlain v. Granola, alleges a bot-free note taker captured conversations without the other people's knowledge, per RuntimeWire. It's an allegation, and nothing has been decided. This isn't legal advice, so check the rules where you and the others are.
