The best BetterDictation alternatives for Mac

BetterDictation is $39 once for local Whisper on Apple silicon, but its cleanup is a $2 a month add-on that sends text to OpenAI. Koi cleans up on the Mac and runs on Intel, VoiceInk does local dictation for $25, and FluidVoice and Handy are free.

Why people look for a BetterDictation alternative

BetterDictation is still live and selling. It runs OpenAI's Whisper (large-v3-turbo, its FAQ says) on Apple's Neural Engine, so dictation works offline in 100+ languages, in any app, with push-to-talk on ⌥ Space by default. The app is a one-time purchase. Its AI cleanup is a separate subscription.

The usual reasons people look around:

  • An Intel Mac. BetterDictation needs Apple silicon, M1 or newer.
  • Cleanup costs extra, and goes to OpenAI. Filler-word removal, stammer fixes, formatting and grammar polish are in the Pro add-on, at $2 a month billed annually, which sends your text to OpenAI and needs internet.
  • Price. Basic is $39 for one Mac. VoiceInk does local dictation for $25, and some apps are free.
  • One model. If Whisper Turbo struggles with your accent or language, there's no other model listed to try.
  • Signs of life. The site shows no version number or changelog, and many of its testimonials link to 2023 and 2024 posts. It says paid licenses get regular updates, but you can't see them.

We make Koi, so read this with that in mind. Prices and features come from each app's own site, checked October 21, 2026, in USD.

There's a 14-day money-back guarantee. It's Mac only for now, with a waitlist for Windows. Details are on BetterDictation's site. Without Pro, you get Whisper's text with automatic punctuation; filler-word removal, stammer fixes and formatting are the Pro part.

The best BetterDictation alternatives for Mac

1. Koi

Best for: Local dictation with the cleanup done on the Mac, on Intel too

Koi does most of what BetterDictation's Pro add-on does, without sending anything. Tap Fn + ⌥ in any app and talk; speech is turned into text on your Mac, and so is the tidying. Filler words go, a little word stammered twice is written once, a correction said out loud in English keeps only the fix, and a spoken list becomes a list. It works offline, on Apple silicon and Intel, with macOS 14 or later.

You're not tied to one model. Parakeet v3 is built in, the fastest, for 25 European languages. Whisper Base, Small and Large v3 Turbo, Cohere Transcribe, Qwen3-ASR and Granite Speech are a download away, 100 languages between them. Read more in how Koi's speech models compare.

Koi also keeps up to 300 of your words, types snippets, and records calls and transcribes files on the Mac. Tap Fn + ⌘ to talk to Koi, which uses cloud AI.

Where BetterDictation wins: one payment of $39 and you're done. Koi costs more: Pro is $20 a month after a 3-day trial with a card, or Lifetime paid once, $59 for the first 25 buyers, rising to $199.

2. VoiceInk

Best for: The same idea, cheaper and open source

VoiceInk is the most direct swap. It also transcribes on Apple silicon, but it's $25 for one Mac, $39 for two and $49 for three, and removes filler words without a subscription. Optional cloud enhancement sends only text. The code is on GitHub under GPLv3, so you can see it's maintained. See VoiceInk alternatives and VoiceInk vs Superwhisper.

3. FluidVoice

Best for: Free, open source, with local cleanup

FluidVoice is free and GPLv3, runs Parakeet, Nemotron, Cohere Transcribe, Apple Speech and Whisper on the Mac, and cleans up text with its own Fluid-1 models, also on the Mac. It needs macOS 15 or later, and uses Whisper models on Intel.

4. Handy

Best for: Free Whisper or Parakeet dictation, on any Mac

Handy is free and MIT-licensed, with Apple silicon and Intel downloads, and runs Whisper Small, Medium, Turbo or Large, or Parakeet V3. It's as simple as BetterDictation, with more model choice and no price. See Handy alternatives.

5. Superwhisper

Best for: Free local Whisper, with AI modes and every platform on Pro

Superwhisper's free plan already matches BetterDictation's core: unlimited dictation with local Whisper models, plus a vocabulary and text replacements. Pro is $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year or $249.99 once, with AI modes, cloud models and file transcription on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.

6. Spokenly

Best for: Free local models, and Local+ for $29 once

Spokenly's local Whisper and Parakeet models are free and unlimited, with no account. Local+ is $29 once, $10 less than BetterDictation Basic. Pro, $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, adds cloud models and hosted cleanup. See Spokenly alternatives.

Over three years, BetterDictation Basic with Pro is about $111: $39 plus $72. VoiceInk stays $25 and the free apps $0. Koi Pro paid yearly is $576, and Lifetime is paid once. Koi only makes sense on price if you also want call recording, file transcription or the assistant. See Koi's pricing.

Is BetterDictation worth it in 2026?

On an Apple silicon Mac, BetterDictation still does the core job: Whisper Turbo, offline, in any app, for one payment. The question is what $39 buys you that you can't get for less. Three years of each, from the official prices, with no discounts or taxes:

Plan3 yearsCleanup included
BetterDictation Basic$39No
BetterDictation Basic with Pro$111Yes, via OpenAI
VoiceInk, one Mac$25Filler words removed

FluidVoice or Handy$0FluidVoice on the Mac
Superwhisper Pro, lifetime$249.99AI modes
Koi Pro, yearly$576On the Mac
Koi Lifetime$59 to $199On the Mac

Our take: if you already own it and it works, keep it. If you're buying today for dictation alone, VoiceInk does the same job for less with its code in the open, and FluidVoice does it for free. Pay for Koi when you want the cleanup on the Mac, an Intel Mac covered, or call recording too.

When BetterDictation is still fine

Stay on BetterDictation if

  • It already runs well on your Apple silicon Mac and you've paid.
  • Whisper Turbo gets your words right and you don't want to try other models.
  • You want raw Whisper text with no cleanup, offline.
  • You need ten Macs covered once, with the Studio license.

How to switch from BetterDictation

  1. Note your shortcut. BetterDictation's default is ⌥ Space, so pick something else for the new app or quit BetterDictation while you test.
  2. If you pay for Pro, check when it renews and cancel before then.
  3. Dictate the same email, chat reply and name-heavy paragraph in both, with cleanup on in the new app.
  4. In Koi, add names in Settings, Dictation, Your words. If Parakeet misses your language, download Whisper or another model and switch to it.
  5. Keep BetterDictation installed for a week before you remove it.

Which BetterDictation alternative fits you

  • Want cleanup that never leaves the Mac, on Intel too, plus call recording? Koi.
  • Want the same pay-once local app, for less? VoiceInk.
  • Want free? FluidVoice, Handy, Spokenly or Superwhisper's free plan.
