How to record a Zoom meeting on your Mac
How to record a Zoom meeting on Mac as the host or a participant, with both sides' audio, plus Zoom's own transcripts and the consent rules to follow first.
Zoom retired the AI Companion name in June 2026; its notes now live in Zoom Hub. The best alternatives for Mac: Koi to record any call with no bot and keep the transcript and video on your Mac, Granola or Jamie for bot-free cloud notes, and Otter, Fathom or tl;dv for a team library.

For a Mac, Koi is the closest thing to Zoom's AI notes that works the same on every call app and keeps the call on your computer: it records Zoom, Meet, Teams or any call with no bot, transcribes on your Mac, keeps the audio or a video of the screen there, and writes a summary and to-dos when you say yes. Granola and Jamie also take notes with no bot, in the cloud. Otter, Fathom and tl;dv add a team library, with a bot or without.
One thing first: Zoom retired the AI Companion name in June 2026. Its community guide says the features, like meeting summaries, now go by their own names under “Zoom AI” and are still included with paid Zoom Workplace plans. ZoomMate, launched June 1, 2026, is a separate paid AI teammate from $20 a user a month.
We make Koi, so read this with that in mind. Everything about Zoom and the other apps comes from their own sites, checked October 21, 2026. We didn't run tests or benchmarks.
Zoom
Inside Zoom, meeting summaries are counted per meeting you host. For notes beyond that there's My Notes, which takes notes on Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and other platforms, and in person, with no bot. It's part of the Zoom Workplace app, needs version 6.7.5 or later for every feature, and shows a visible indicator in a Zoom meeting while it transcribes. Notes and transcripts are stored in Zoom Hub and Zoom Canvas. Zoom lists 9 languages for My Notes.
On price, Zoom's page says the free Basic plan gets 3 My Notes uses a month, summaries for 3 hosted meetings a month, and meetings of up to 40 minutes. Paid Zoom Workplace plans start at $14.16 a user a month and include My Notes, and a standalone plan starts at $8.33 a user a month.
Zoom's responsible AI whitepaper says it doesn't use customer audio, video, chat or screen sharing to train its own or third-party AI models.
Why switch
If your company already pays for Zoom Workplace, the built-in notes cost nothing extra and are a sensible default. People look elsewhere when they want the call on their own Mac, a recording to keep, or one tool that treats every call app the same.
The picks
Best for: Any call app, transcribed and kept on your Mac
Tap Fn + ⌃ on any call, in the Zoom app, Teams, Meet in a browser or FaceTime, and pick Online call, then Audio only or Audio and video. Koi records your Mac, not the meeting, so it doesn't matter who hosts or which plan they're on. Your microphone is You, what the Mac plays is Them, and each stretch of talk is written down on your Mac as it pauses. The audio, or a video of the screen with both sides' sound, is saved on your Mac with the transcript.
When Zoom, Teams or a Meet call starts using the microphone, Koi's dock asks “Record this call?”. When it ends, say yes to “Summarize this call?” for a title, a short summary, your own to-dos as checkboxes and a follow-up email. Only the transcript's words go to Koi's AI. On macOS 26 or later, Koi can also show what the others say as live captions in your language, translated on your Mac.
Pro is $20 a month or $192 a year after a 3-day trial with a card; Lifetime is paid once: $59 for the first 25 buyers, rising to $199. Weakness: Mac only (macOS 14 or later), no phone app, no speaker names beyond You and Them, and nothing shared with your team.
Best for: Bot-free notes on every device
Granola listens through your computer's audio with no bot and fills out your own notes from the transcript, on Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android and Apple Watch. Its security page says it uses cloud transcription providers, doesn't store audio, keeps notes on AWS in the US, and trains on anonymized data unless you opt out. Basic is free with 30 days of history; Business is $14 a user a month.
Weakness: no recording to replay.
Best for: A notetaker for Zoom, Teams and Meet, with a team library
Otter's notetaker can join Zoom, Teams and Meet calls, and its desktop app for Mac and Windows records without a bot. Basic is free with 300 minutes a month, 30 minutes per conversation, and your 25 most recent conversations. Pro is $16.99 a month, or $8.33 billed yearly, with Salesforce and HubSpot.
Weakness: six transcription languages, and everything is in Otter's cloud.
Best for: Unlimited free recordings
Fathom's Free plan lists unlimited recordings and transcriptions with instant summaries, clips and search. Its bot joins by default, or you can record bot-free on a Mac, in beta. Premium is $20 a month, or $16 yearly.
Weakness: bot-free capture is still a beta.
Best for: Free recordings, hosted in the EU
tl;dv records Zoom, Meet and Teams with a bot, or bot-free from its Mac and Windows app, in 30+ languages, hosted in the EU. Free has unlimited recordings, with full AI notes on 10 meetings. Pro is €29 a seat a month, or €18 billed yearly.
Weakness: bot-free recording is audio only.
Best for: No bot, data kept in Europe
Jamie records your device's audio with no bot on any call platform or in person, on Mac, Windows and phones, in 99+ languages. It streams audio for transcription without storing it and keeps data in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK. Free is 10 AI notes a month; Plus is €21 a month.
Weakness: no recording, and 30 minutes per meeting on Free.

Fair is fair
Stay on Zoom AI if
Koi is the better pick when you're a guest on someone else's call, you hop between Zoom, Meet and Teams in a day, or the call shouldn't sit in anyone's cloud. Koi's transcript and recording are files on your Mac, and the call's page is a document you can edit and export to Word or PDF. Koi also has unlimited dictation in any app and a calendar that offers the dates a call agreed on.
Guests
Zoom's free plan counts meeting summaries per meeting you host. My Notes is your own, and works on calls you join on Zoom, Teams or Meet, but it's still Zoom's app, Zoom's account and Zoom's cloud.
Koi doesn't care who hosts. It records your own microphone and what your Mac plays, so it works the same as a guest, on a free Zoom account, or on a Teams call from a client. That also means Koi doesn't announce itself to the call, so tell people you're recording.
