The best iA Writer alternatives for Mac
Looking for an iA Writer alternative on Mac? Koi, Ulysses, Typora, Bear, Scrivener and Obsidian compared on editor, files, voice, Word export and price.
The best Typora alternative depends on what you want added: Obsidian to organise the same Markdown files, iA Writer for a phone app, Zettlr for free academic writing, and Koi for rich pages with formulas, charts and dictation. For numbered equations and LaTeX export, Typora is still the better pick.

Typora is a Markdown editor with no preview pane: you type Markdown and it turns into headings, lists and tables in place. It works on .md files wherever you keep them, with a file tree, a file list and an outline beside the text, and you sync them yourself with Dropbox or iCloud if you like.
For technical writing it's hard to beat at the price. Math is MathJax with most extensions, AMSmath and mhchem for chemistry included, and equations can be numbered automatically. It draws Mermaid, flowchart and sequence diagrams, and exports to PDF with bookmarks, Word, OpenOffice, LaTeX, MediaWiki and ePub. On typora.io it's $14.99 once for up to 3 devices, on Mac, Windows and Linux, after a 15-day trial.
We make Koi, so read this with that in mind. Every fact about another app comes from its own site or App Store page, checked October 21, 2026. We didn't run tests. And up front: on equations and export formats, Typora does more than Koi.

Why people look
Typora is an editor for files, with a file tree and a file list, not a notes library. It has no phone app and no sync of its own, so people with hundreds of notes often want more organisation. It has no AI and no voice. And everything is Markdown, so a table with formulas or a chart drawn from numbers isn't something it does.
The list
Best for: Rich pages with formulas, charts and math that you can talk into, on one Mac
Koi has the same idea of formatting as you type, in a rich editor rather than Markdown. Type / for a table with spreadsheet formulas (start a cell with =) and column totals, a chart in one of 11 kinds drawn from a small table, or an equation in LaTeX. Pages export to Word or PDF on A4, US Letter, A5 or US Legal, and Copy as Markdown or Export All as Markdown give you .md files back, tables as GitHub tables and equations as $$…$$.
Then voice, which Typora doesn't touch. Tap Fn + ⌥ and Koi types what you say, on your Mac, offline, in any app (more on dictation). Tap Fn + ⌃ to record a call or a class into a page. Tap Fn + ⌘ and ask Koi to chart a table or write a section; that uses Koi's AI, which is online.
What you give up: plain files day to day, numbered equations, LaTeX export, diagrams, Windows and Linux, and a low one-time price. Pro is $20 a month after a 3-day trial, or Lifetime from $59 once.
Best for: The same Markdown files, organised, with links and plugins
Point Obsidian at the folder you use with Typora and your files work as is. You get backlinks, search across everything, phone apps and plugins, for free; Sync is $4 a month billed yearly. Its built-in export is PDF only on the desktop. See our Obsidian alternatives.
Best for: Plain text writing with focus, on Mac, iPhone and Windows
iA Writer also works on Markdown files, with a separate preview, Focus Mode and KaTeX equations. It adds an iPhone and iPad app and publishing to WordPress and Ghost. It's $49.99 once on Mac. More in our iA Writer alternatives.
Best for: Free, open-source Markdown for academic writing with citations
Zettlr is free on Mac, Windows and Linux. It draws LaTeX math in the editor, cites from Zotero in any of 9,000 citation styles, and exports through Pandoc with templates. The closest free match to Typora for papers.
Best for: Markdown that formats as you type, with sync to iPhone and iPad
Bear formats Markdown in place like Typora, adds tags and links between notes, and syncs through iCloud on Pro, at $29.99 a year. It renders LaTeX with MathJax and exports to Word, PDF, ePub and more. Apple only, and notes live in Bear's library. See our Bear alternatives.
Best for: Long writing and publishing on Apple devices
Ulysses gives you a library, writing goals, export styles and publishing to WordPress, Ghost, Medium and Micro.blog, with tables and LaTeX equations. It's $5.99 a month or $39.99 a year, on Mac, iPad and iPhone.

Head to head
Moving
Import takes one file at a time. If you live in a folder of hundreds of .md files, Obsidian is the easier move.
How to
This is the part Typora can't do, so here's exactly how it works in Koi:
In Markdown, a chart is kept as its data table, so the numbers stay readable in any other app.
