How to merge PDFs on your Mac
Merge PDFs on a Mac without a website: Finder's Create PDF, Preview's sidebar, a Shortcuts Quick Action, or Koi's Shift wheel. Plus fixing the wrong order.
iLovePDF's website uploads your PDF and deletes it within two hours. To merge, split, compress or convert offline on a Mac, drag the PDF with Shift held onto Koi's wheel, use Preview for free, or PDFgear or Sejda Desktop. iLovePDF's own Desktop app also works offline.

iLovePDF's website merges, splits, compresses, converts, edits, signs and protects PDFs on its servers. Your file is uploaded over HTTPS, and its security page says uploaded files are deleted for good within two hours of being processed. The free plan limits each task, like 2 files at a time for Compress and 25 for Merge. Premium is $7 a month, or $48 a year ($4 a month), on iLovePDF's pricing.
There's also iLovePDF Desktop, for Mac and Windows, which iLovePDF says handles most of its web tools without an internet connection. Its pages disagree on what's free: the pricing page says the free plan doesn't include Desktop, while the Desktop page shows a free reader. iLovePDF doesn't publish a list of which tools work offline.
We make Koi, so read this with that in mind. Koi is first below because it does iLovePDF's most-used jobs, merge, split, compress, organize and convert, on your Mac with nothing uploaded and no limits per task. It doesn't edit, sign, protect or watermark, and the picks say who does. Every fact about another app comes from its own site, help pages or Mac App Store listing, checked October 21, 2026. We didn't run tests or benchmarks.
Why switch
The picks
Best for: Merging, splitting, compressing and converting PDFs on your Mac
Start dragging a PDF, or several, and hold Shift: a wheel of six opens round your pointer, with Compress, Organize, Metadata, Split, Merge and Convert. Merge lists every PDF you dragged in order, lets you move or remove them and add more, and saves one file. Split makes a file per page or per range, like 1-3, 4, 5-. Compress has Light, Balanced and Strong, with the size before and after. Organize reorders, turns, copies and removes pages.
Convert saves a copy as Word, Pages, PowerPoint, Excel, JPG, PNG, text or Markdown. JPG and PNG are each page at 200 pixels to an inch. Word gets the PDF's words, with bigger lines as headings, not its layout or fonts, and PowerPoint gets each page as a picture. The other way round, Koi's document, slides and spreadsheet wheels turn Word, PowerPoint and Excel files into PDFs. Everything runs on your Mac, nothing is uploaded, and a copy lands beside the original.
Koi needs a plan: Pro is $20 a month or $192 a year after a 3-day trial that needs a card, or Lifetime, paid once, from $59. Weakness: no editing, signing, page numbers, watermarks or passwords, no scanned PDF to Word, and a PDF locked with a password doesn't open.
Best for: Merging, reordering and signing for free
Preview is on every Mac and never needs the internet. It combines PDFs by dragging thumbnails, adds, deletes and moves pages, fills and signs forms, makes a PDF smaller with the Reduce File Size filter, and locks it with a password from File, Export.
Weakness: Apple's guide lists no conversion to Word, Excel or PowerPoint, and no split tool.
Best for: A free editor with conversions, mostly offline
PDFgear is free with no sign-up. It edits text and pictures, converts to 30+ formats, compresses, reorders, signs, fills forms, redacts and reads scans, and can batch convert offline, per its Mac page. That page also says AI features and online services need the internet. It runs on macOS 10.14 or later.
Weakness: you have to know which tools are local and which go online.
Best for: An offline app with web-style tools, free for 3 tasks a day
Sejda Desktop runs on Intel and Apple silicon Macs and says files are processed on your computer, not uploaded. Free is 3 tasks a day, with documents up to 50 MB and 200 pages; Desktop and Web together is $63 a year, on its pricing. Weakness: it no longer sells one-time licenses.
Best for: A paid editor with batch tools, paid once if you like
UPDF edits, annotates, converts to Office and images, organizes pages, fills and signs forms, password-protects, compresses and redacts, with batch processing. On its Mac App Store listing it's $49.99 a year or $79.99 once, and one license covers Mac, iPhone and iPad. Weakness: its AI chat and summaries are a separate add-on, and its listing says text recognition isn't in the App Store version.
Best for: Open source PDF tools you host yourself

Head to head
iLovePDF does more PDF jobs: page numbers, watermarks, passwords, editing, signing, and it's on phones and any browser. Its Desktop app also works offline for most tools. If you already pay for Premium, try that before anything else.
Koi is better if you want the common jobs done without a website, limits per task or an extra app open. Drag, hold Shift, drop. And Koi does far more than PDFs: the same wheel edits photos and videos and opens zips, and Koi itself types what you say with dictation, records calls and keeps a calendar, all on one plan.

“Offline” can mean different things on different apps, so ask four questions before you trust one with a private file:
For Koi: every Shift wheel tool runs on your Mac with nothing uploaded, the original is never touched, and the Shift wheel uses no AI, so it never counts against Koi's usage. Koi does need an account and a plan.
