Miro is an online whiteboard for teams: sticky notes, templates, workshops and many people on one big board. Its pricing page has a free plan, where you can make as many boards as you like but only the 3 most recently edited stay editable. Exports are low resolution, and boards can't be shared privately. Starter is $8 and Business $20 per member a month, billed yearly. Boards live in Miro's cloud.
That's a lot of board for a team, and a lot of limits for one person who just wants to sketch. If you're looking for a free Miro alternative for personal use, most of the picks below cost nothing.
We make Koi, so read this with that in mind. Koi is first below because it's ours. Every fact about another app comes from that app's own site, checked October 25, 2026.
The picks
Best for: A personal board on your Mac desktop, in no cloud
Koi 2.0 has an endless board that works like Excalidraw, drawn by the Mac app itself. It sits on your wallpaper as a widget, under every window and on every Space, showing the board as you left it. Click it and it grows into a big window; Esc or ⌘W folds it back. Shapes with a hand-drawn look, arrows that stay connected, a pen, text, sticky notes with the date, frames, groups, photo frames, stickers and paper backgrounds. Export as PNG, PDF or SVG.
Each board is a file on your Mac, never uploaded. Like any window, Koi's AI sees a board on screen when your screen goes with a question. Like Miro's, it has a chat bar at the bottom where you ask Koi to draw, change or explain the board, and it draws there itself; that, Text to diagram and Wireframe to code use Koi's AI only when you ask, and count against your plan's Koi usage. Tables and ten templates are built in.
Where Miro is better: Koi's board is for one person on one Mac. No team, no sharing by link, no templates, no sync, no iPhone or iPad. It isn't sold on its own: Koi is $20 a month or $7 for a first week, or Lifetime, paid once, with dictation, call recording and an assistant in the same app.
Best for: Free, for personal use and family, on every Apple device
Freeform is free and made by Apple, on macOS 13.1 or later. Boards sync through iCloud to your iPhone and iPad, and you can invite people to work on one in real time. It exports a board as a PDF. For personal boards on Apple devices, it's the obvious free pick.
Best for: Free, with files on your computer
tldraw is a free whiteboard at tldraw.com, and tldraw offline is a free desktop app for Mac, Windows and Linux. The desktop app needs no account and no server, and saves boards as files where you pick.
Best for: Quick hand-drawn diagrams, free, with others
Excalidraw is free in the browser, with unlimited collaborators on its free version, one infinite scene, and export to PNG, SVG and file. Excalidraw+ is $6 per user a month. Your drawing is kept in the browser unless you save a file. More in our Excalidraw alternatives.
Best for: Teams that already use Figma
FigJam is Figma's whiteboard, the closest to Miro for a team. Starter is free with limited access. A Collab seat is $3 a month on the Professional plan, and $5 a month on Organization and Enterprise, billed yearly.
Best for: Mood boards and creative projects
Milanote is a board for notes, pictures and links. The free plan holds 100 notes, images or links and 10 file uploads. Paid is $9.99 a month billed yearly, or $12.50 month to month.
Best for: A local-first board on Mac, iPad and iPhone
Muse is now called Allume. It runs on Mac, iPad and iPhone and calls its data local-first, with sync. The free plan has 2 workspaces, 100 cards in each and one collaborator. Unlimited is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, and it's in Setapp too.
