The best Excalidraw alternatives for Mac

What Excalidraw does, and what it costs

Excalidraw is a whiteboard with a hand-drawn look: boxes, diamonds, arrows and text that look sketched, on an endless canvas. It's free at excalidraw.com. Its pricing page lists the free version with one infinite scene, unlimited collaborators, export to PNG, SVG and file, and 10 AI requests a day. Excalidraw+, the paid version, is $6 per user a month, and paying yearly saves 14%.

It runs in the browser. There's no Excalidraw app for Mac: the old desktop app was retired on December 17, 2020, and Excalidraw tells you to install the web app instead, which works offline and opens in its own window. Your drawing is kept in the browser's storage, so clearing the site's data clears it too, unless you saved a .excalidraw file.

We make Koi, so read this with that in mind. Koi is first below because it's ours. Every fact about another app comes from that app's own site, checked October 25, 2026.

Why people look for an Excalidraw alternative

  • They want a real Mac app, not a browser tab.
  • They lost a drawing when the browser's data was cleared.
  • They want their boards as files on their Mac, or in no cloud at all.
  • They want the board somewhere they'll see it, not buried in a tab.
  • They want more than one scene without paying for Excalidraw+.

The best Excalidraw alternatives for Mac in 2026

1. Koi

Best for: Excalidraw's tools as a native board on your Mac desktop

Koi 2.0 has an endless board that works as Excalidraw does and is laid out the same way, drawn by the app itself rather than a web page. The tools along the top take Excalidraw's letters: hand, select, rectangle, diamond, ellipse, arrow, line, pen, text, eraser, plus sticky notes, a laser pointer, a lasso and a bucket. Arrows hold on to shapes and follow them. Sloppiness has architect, artist and cartoonist, and Excalifont is one of its fonts. Frames, groups, a right-click menu, find on canvas, draw to shape and Mermaid to diagram are there too.

What Excalidraw doesn't do: the board lives on your wallpaper as a widget, under every window and on every Space. Click it and it grows into a big window; Esc or ⌘W folds it back. It also has photo frames, stickers and paper backgrounds like kraft and notebook paper. Each board is a file on your Mac, never uploaded. Like any window, Koi's AI sees a board on screen when your screen goes with a question. Its chat bar asks Koi to draw, change or explain the board, and Koi draws on it itself; that, Text to diagram and Wireframe to code use Koi's AI only when you ask, and count against your plan's Koi usage. It also has tables and ten templates.

Where Excalidraw is better: live collaboration, any browser on any computer, a free version, and many scenes with Excalidraw+. Koi's boards are on one Mac, in English. It isn't sold on its own: Koi is $20 a month or $7 for a first week, or Lifetime, paid once, with dictation, call recording and an assistant in the same app.

2. tldraw offline

Best for: A free desktop whiteboard that saves files on your Mac

tldraw is another simple whiteboard, free at tldraw.com. Since July 16, 2026, tldraw offline is a free desktop app for macOS (one download for Apple silicon and Intel), Windows and Linux. It needs no account and no server, and saves your boards as .tldraw files where you pick, which fixes the browser-storage worry. It isn't open source, and it has a local API that AI agents can draw with.

3. Apple Freeform

Best for: Free, from Apple, synced to your iPhone and iPad

Freeform is free and built by Apple, on macOS 13.1 or later. Boards sync through iCloud to your iPhone and iPad, and others can work on them with you in real time. It exports a board as a PDF.

4. Obsidian Canvas, or Excalidraw in Obsidian

Best for: Boards as files beside your notes

Canvas comes free with Obsidian, and each canvas is a file in your vault in the open JSON Canvas format. If you want Excalidraw itself, a community plugin runs it inside Obsidian, so your drawings are files in the vault too.

5. Miro

Best for: Whiteboarding with a team

Miro is the big team whiteboard, in the cloud. On the free plan only your 3 most recently edited boards stay editable. Starter is $8 and Business $20 per member a month, billed yearly. More in our Miro alternatives.

How each one does what you use Excalidraw for

  • A quick diagram with boxes and arrows: all of them. Koi keeps Excalidraw's hand-drawn look.
  • Keeping it safe: Koi saves each board to a file on your Mac by itself, tldraw offline saves files you name, Freeform keeps boards in iCloud, Excalidraw keeps them in the browser unless you save a file.
  • Drawing with someone live: Excalidraw, Freeform and Miro. Koi doesn't.
  • Turning text into a diagram: Excalidraw's AI, and Koi's Text to diagram, which sends what you typed to Koi's AI. Mermaid to diagram runs on your Mac in Koi.
  • Exporting: Excalidraw gives PNG and SVG, Koi PNG, PDF and SVG, Freeform a PDF.

How to draw on Koi's board

  1. Open Koi 2.0. The board sits on your wallpaper, under your windows. It's on to begin with: Settings, Notch & tools, Board on the desktop.
  2. Click it. It grows into a big window. Or open the notch and click Board.
  3. Pick a tool by its letter, as in Excalidraw, and draw.
  4. Press Esc or ⌘W and it folds back onto the desktop, showing what you drew.
