With Koi 2.0, drag files up to the notch and drop them on AirDrop: macOS's AirDrop window opens to pick who gets them. Boring Notch and NotchDrop do it free with a file shelf.

Drag the file up and let go

macOS doesn't do anything with the notch, so AirDrop from the notch needs an app. With Koi 2.0, drag files from Finder up to the notch: it widens into Files Tray and AirDrop. Drop them on AirDrop, and macOS's own AirDrop window opens for them, where you pick the iPhone, iPad or Mac to send them to. Free notch apps like Boring Notch and NotchDrop do it with a file shelf that has an AirDrop button.

It saves the trip to the Share menu or Finder's AirDrop window, which is handy when the file is on your desktop and the window you're in is full screen.

We make Koi, so read this with that in mind. Everything about Koi here is what version 2.0 does. The AirDrop steps come from Apple's own guide, and the other apps' features from their own pages, checked October 25, 2026.

How to AirDrop from the notch with Koi

  1. Make sure AirDrop can reach the other device: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, and the person nearby with AirDrop on.
  2. Select one or more files in Finder or on the desktop.
  3. Drag them up to the notch. It widens into two spots: Files Tray and AirDrop.
  4. Let go on AirDrop. macOS's AirDrop window opens with your files.
  5. Click the person or device to send them to. They accept on their side, as with any AirDrop.

Koi only hands the files to macOS. AirDrop sends them straight from your Mac to theirs: they never go through Koi's server. On a Mac without a notch, drag them to the small notch Koi draws at the top of the screen.

How to AirDrop on a Mac without any app

From Apple's guide to AirDrop on Mac, three ways:

  1. In Finder, Control-click the file, choose Share, then AirDrop, and pick the person.
  2. In an app, click the Share button, choose AirDrop, and pick the person.
  3. Open Finder's AirDrop window from the sidebar, and drag the file onto the person.

To be found, turn AirDrop on in Control Center and pick Contacts Only or Everyone. Apple's AirDrop guide has the rest.

Koi or a free notch app?

For AirDrop alone, NotchDrop and Boring Notch are free and add a shelf to park files on, as Koi's Files Tray does. Koi is worth it when you'd use the rest of what opens from the same notch: an AI you talk to that sees your screen, dictation in any app, call recording, your documents and calendar, your music and a teleprompter. Koi is $20 a month, $7 for a first week, or Lifetime, paid once, with no free trial. See Koi's plans, or show Spotify in the notch.
