Drop it on the notch. Drag it out later.
Drop files on the notch to keep them handy, then drag them into any app later. Koi's Files Tray keeps a link to each file, never a copy, and sends nothing.
Dropzone 5 is the deepest drag and drop tool, free with Pro at $35. Dropover gives floating shelves with links, Yoink a plain shelf paid once, and Koi a Files Tray in the notch.

Dropzone 5 opens at the top of the screen as you drag, or from the menu bar or F3. It has a Drop Bar that holds files for later, and grids of actions to drop them on: Rename and Move, Copy, AirDrop, Launch Apps, Run Shortcuts, resize and compress images, download videos, and upload to SFTP, Amazon S3 or Imgur. You can write your own actions in Ruby or Python, and drive it from the command line.
There's a free version. Pro is $35 for a lifetime licence on its site, with a 14-day trial; it's also on the Mac App Store and in Setapp. It needs macOS 13 or later. Dropzone 5 came out in March 2026 and 5.1.7 on October 21.
We make Koi, so read this with that in mind. Every fact about another app comes from that app's own site, checked October 26, 2026.
The picks
Best for: Holding files in the notch, and changing them with Shift
Drop files on the notch's Files Tray and they wait in its Tray tab until you drag them into any app. Right beside it, AirDrop sends them. And hold Shift while you drag a file, and Koi's Shift wheel compresses, crops, converts, trims or merges it on your Mac.
Where Dropzone is better, plainly: Koi has no uploads, no custom actions or scripts, no grids to build, and no command line. Koi is $20 a month or Lifetime, paid once, with dictation, call recording and an assistant in the same app.
Best for: Floating shelves with share links
Shake the pointer mid-drag for a shelf, or drop on the notch. Shelves resize and convert images, make ZIPs, run your scripts and upload for a link. Pro is $7.99 once on the Mac App Store. More in our Dropover alternatives.
Best for: A plain shelf with a clipboard history, paid once
A shelf at the screen edge, stacks, a clipboard history and Handoff. $8.99 once, macOS 10.13 or later. More in our Yoink alternatives.
